Question Usk Reservoir, Wales

Anyone ever fished Usk Reservoir in Wales before? Been doing a bit of searching and as well as fly fishing you can spin and use worms (sorry Smoothy )

Is it any good?

Not heard of Usk reservoir. Think it must be one of the ones up in the Brecon Beacons. I've recently discovered a reservoir in Devon where you can fish for wild trout using rod and line method and it's also completely free so looking forward to trying there soon (had a look the other day) but as it is a large expanse of water and presumably not stocked I guess it will be hard going.

Hi.. It's a very nice water.. a big water and can get a bit breezy.. plenty of bank space and room to flycast.. think it's about £14 for a ticket this year (avail. at carpark machine). Lost my biggest rainbow ever from the rocks on western shore just as was about to net it after a titanic battle.. estimated it to be around 8-9lbs.. I just sat on the rock and cried!. Used to have my own boat on there too.. anything green and bushy works.. Well worth a day trip.. Easiest way there is from A470 to Sennybridge.. at the next village take a left at the pub and follow that road for about 8 miles and it's s/p on the right.
(massive pike in there too!)

Re: Usk Reservoir, Wales

Usk reservoir is a cracking bit of water. As I recall, Green Peters & Claret Bumbles were the flie's that did the business for me. However last time I fished it I was eaten alive by the midges. Only place i've encountered em outside of Scotland. Take plenty of Jungle Formula midge repellant...

Never really looked into it Dave.. maybe worth lookin' at Welsh Water web site?

As for the midges.. worst I ever had was at Pontsticill a few years ago.. Seems Avon 'Skin so Soft' skin cream (Woodland Glen flavour) is reputed to be the best ever repellant.. is even used by Marines when out on exercise.. makes yer skin nice 'n soft too!! I bought some and gonna try it later this summer
