5`0" fly rod

Well finally got to use my new 5ft 2/3 weight fly rod, but not as I thought. Mate and I were fishing in Friday night as we usually do, I was using an 8`0" Vision Intro 4wt rod with a 3wtf DT line to start with. I was about 30yds in front of him, casting a dry (Dark Olive #14) under the overhanging branches of a tree, when " Aw s#*t " broke the evening silence. He`d only just caught some branches on the back cast, snagged and broke the top section of his rod on the forward cast. It was the only rod he had with him, but I`d brought the 5 footer to show him, although not intending to use it that evening, it was now in the boot of his car. We weren`t that far from the car, so I went for it and gave him mine.

Back in business, with borrowed rod.

Nice mid to tip action once I got used to it, but enough dig to send 30ft of line to cover a rise (which was more than enough for the section we were fishing).

You can see the two rises in the pic, the nearest one produced a nice little 1/2lb+ brownie, which felt like a 2lber on the wee rod

This is excellent dry fly water, we don`t fish here often enough for me. We were picking off 1/2 and 1/4 lbers all along, not a lot of rises, but flicking the dry under the overhanging branches

On the 5`0" rod they seemed like monsterslol, but one of the best outings for a while, especially on the light tackle. Cracking wee rod.

Cheers Peter.

Some nice photos, thats a nice looking river, shame your mate broke his rod, but at least you broke yours in.

Re: 5`0" fly rod

Thanks for the comments guys.
We used to fish 3 rivers up here, but down to 2 now. This one happens to be my favourite and although the trout tend to be smaller, the scenery and wildlife more than makes up for this. My favourite stretch is tree-lined for about 2.1/2 miles (except in autumn when the leaves start to fall), approx. 1ft - 3ft deep, magic to wade along at 5am.

Hi MRG, The rod was meant for fishing the smaller stretches and tributaries way upstream. I probably wouldn`t have used it that night, as I said, I only brought it to show my mate, but when he broke his, it was the only way to keep both of us fishing. It`s not to hard to cast with a rod that size, but some of the upstream stretches we fish you could almost jump across and a 5ft rod is ideal in the confined spaces. but as Ray said it was nice to break it in. Thanks again.

Peter
