Further down river.

Over the last few years, we`ve tended to move further up river from the centre of the city and found some excellent new stretches. On Monday I decided to re-visit one of our old haunts in the city. This section had everything for dry and wet fly fishing, great fast water riffles and slow glides, ideal.
Tackle for the day:- 7`0" 3/4wt rod 3/4wt reel with 2wt DT floating line, leader 5lb-3lb fluoro line.

I walked about 1/2 mile down stream and fished back with a single dry (# 14 Purple Spinner I tied the night before and treated with Water Shed) Quite a few spinners over the water, it turned out a good choice as 2nd cast to a rise I nailed the trout.

Fishing the dry under the overhanging branches taking trout regularly, I`d almost forgot how good this part of the river was. I stopped to chat with another angler in the middle of a fast run, just as a trout rose to his fly, a nice fish of about 1/2lb, taken on an Alder#12. Netted the fish for him, then I moved on upstream. I saw a fish rise just under an over hanging chestnut tree, but after a half dozen casts, thought of changing the fly, I made one more cast and fish hammered the fly,...magic. Nice fish of about the 1/2lb mark.

The only thing missing was wildlife, this area was quite popular with dog walkers, but the fishing made up for it. I stopped to talk to a couple of guys float fishing worms and ended up parting with some wet flies for trotting downstream, wonder how they got on.

By now I`d reached the point I`d arrived a few hours ago, decision time, pack up after a good morning`s fishing, or hmm. About a 1/2 hours walk up-river I remembered there was a pool that sometimes held a few big trout, yes worth a visit.

I made up a leader 5lb-3lb with a dropper for the dry and 3ft of 3lb to a gold head on the point. Worked a treat, although I could have left the gold head, as they all took the dry

The river is teeming with 1/4-1/2 lb trout, with the total C&R for browns voted for this season next year should be a bumper of a year. All in all not a bad day`s fishing.

Re: Further down river.

Thanks for the comments Paul and n_d, saved me from my first embarassing blank lol. My son just bought me a 5`0" fly rod and reel set-up for Father`s day, so weather permitting, will be trying it out over the next few weeks.
