It seems I have joined the ranks Well, after borrowing kit for more than a few sessions now, I've finally taken the plunge and bought myself some fly gear, primarily for resivour fishing which generally I manage to have a go at a few times a year, but also with one eye on landing a Mullet with, as I reckon they'll go like a bullet on the lighter tackle. I picked up a Scierra Ferox 9'6" 7# a Greys GX reel, with a floating and slow sink line and set off for a days fishing at Kennick to play with my new toys. The rod seems fairly stiff actioned which seems to suit my terrible casting style quite well and before too long I was back into the swing of casting without lead and got on with my standard fly fishing tactics of standing on my line and putting large wind knots in the leader every five minutes! The fishing was hard work, with my friend an avid fly man only taking 5 fish through out the day and I managed a couple. The first on the drop and the other right at my feet. Both fish were taken on the sinking line on some black and green creations provided by my mate. A muchly enjoyed day though - I will be back soon. ![]() ![]() __________________ Right then, checklist: Rods. Check. Reels. Check. Speckled Hen. Check. Bait…… BAIT! Sh*t, where’s the bait?

Re: It seems I have joined the ranks Nice one BR, well done on the fish. Sounds like you were using Montana nymphs, good fly on lakes and lochs. Glad you enjoyed the fly fishing.

Re: It seems I have joined the ranks Guess we both have joined the ranks then, bought a 9' #6 Shakespeare Odyssey at the weekend and tried it on my club lake, although there are no trout I managed to catch loads of gorse bushes and grass and also managed to get a couple of knots in the fly line, one in the leader and about three in the tippet .Hoping to get onto the local reservoirs when the season starts and maybe improve my casting as I can only get the fly about 30' at the moment. I am sure this will improve with practice. Anyway good luck in your future success and glad to see you actually caught a nice trout and enjoyed it.

Re: It seems I have joined the ranks Just try carp on the fly, way cheaper, best fly to use is a super bonio, I get mine from sportfish. I do plan on some sea fishing witha fly rod, need to find the time to go fishing first tho. __________________ Ignore the margins at your peril

Nice one Rich. Like Fullcreel says, throw in a hand full of dogfood mixer, wait until the carp are feeding confidently & then cast in a deer hair fly trimmed to look like a dog biscuit. Then hang on tight..... ![]() ![]() __________________ Don't Judge My Path If You Haven't Walked My Journey...
