A few hours on the river. Arrived about 7.15am, still cold (actually it was bloody freezing),the water was a little high after the recent rain, but gin clear. Looked as if it was going to be a half decent day weather wise, with the sun trying hard to break through the cloud. Set up an 8`0" 4wt rod with 3wtDT line and a 9ft x 3lb fluourocarbon leader and as nothing was rising, decided to search out some pools with a dry olive #14 and a gold head ST #18 underneath (turned out to be a wise choice) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lots of small trout, hammering the gold head every 3rd or 4th cast. Even the salmon parr got in on the act. Biggest trout of the day was about 1/4LB,lots just under that. ![]() ![]() Turned really cold and dull about 1.00pm and started to rain, so decided to pack up and go home. Should have been fishing with my mate, but he had to call off today. Good wee session though, even if the river resembles a canal just now. Peter ![]() ![]()

Re: A few hours on the river. Thanks for the comments guys. The river looks pretty bare just now, as I said some parts look like a canal stretch, but another few weeks should really make a difference. Lots of deer and fox tracks along the banks, missed a cracking chance last season to snap a vixen and her cubs at the water`s edge. Maybe this season, who knows. Peter ![]()

Re: A few hours on the river. They do Portland Pirate, the river has a very good return of migratories every year, but like all other rivers in the UK, is only one incident away from disaster. my best are a 6.1/2lb and a 7,1/2lb, both hen fish safely returned. I didn`t catch one last season, even though they were jumping all around us, but then we only tried once. I did get one on camera though, after waiting for 20mins for it to jump. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is what it all boils down to in the end,SEX ![]() ![]() Peter ![]()

Re: A few hours on the river. Hi Jeff, don`t have to do a rain dance up here yet . I think that`s the last of the snow melt off the hills, as the water was freezing, although the day wasn`t too bad ( it did get colder after mid-day though) . No fly life worth mentioning on the water, gold head under dry olive did took most of the fish, but I did get one to the olive. Green pennel took a couple too, should be really good when the temps rise a bit. We tend to be plagued by smoults `til late May early June, had them take the fly in mid air, once had 3 when fishing a team of wets , voracious wee b@#^%@s . Hope you get a nice downpour soon bud.Peter ![]()
