| Tree lined rivers. In some of my posts, I`ve included some really nice scenes of one of my favourite rivers, it`s shallow runs, streamer weeds runs that cover gravel beds and bank side trees, all of which contribute to a great seasons fishing. Last night, brought home the down side of these tree-lined stretches, "Leaves". I arrived at the river about 3.30pm, my mate got held up and wouldn`t be down `til later. I`d brought two rods, my 7`0" 3/4wt and my 9`0" 7/8wt for later use. I set up the 7`0" with the Lamson loaded with a 2wtDT line and a single dry and soon began picking off small trout every few casts. I turned back down stream and changed to a gold head, and fished back down to where I started, which was just at the gates of the golf club (that`s where my mate would be parking). ![]() ![]() He arrived about 5.30pm, quite surprised at the water level, as it had been raining through the night and most of the morning (it takes a while to drain off the hills into river). I put the 7` rod away and set up the 9`with a 7wtF line, and 10ft leader with one dropper, a Teal Silver and Black and a Dunkeld on the point (tied on stronger hooks this time). ![]() We noticed the water level had started to rise and had become slightly coloured, but worked our way downstream anyway casting into likely looking spots. About 8pm-ish, the light began to fade fast, the water which had risen about 2ft now, had turned a muddy brown colour and we`d also began to catch leaves churned up by the faster water. About 9.45pm, the water had become quite fast, we were hooking leaves, almost every cast now and it was now pitch black. Decision time ------ ditch the car and --- THE PUB. ![]() ![]() You tend to forget the downside during the Summer months, still it was enjoyable just being there. Peter ![]() |

| Thanks for the comments guys, that`s what I like about this forum, so friendly. Hi Paul, we`re going to call that stretch "Bat Alley", they really are amazing creatures. Why can`t you fish for pike just now? Peter ![]() Hi Jeff, nice flies, you won`t have any problem seeing those amongst the leaves. I`ve tied some Paras and Klinks with flor-green posts for the end of season, so that should help spotting them. I`ve never tried an "F"fly, I`ve tied a few for mates, but haven`t tried one myself. When you out again? Peter ![]() Hi Dave, I have a wife and son addicted to Eastenders, so it gives me an excuse to go for a few hours. Hi DF, The river turns the a reddish orange in Autumn, beautiful to look at, but a nightmare trying to fish when the leaves fall. Thanks again. Peter ![]() |
