Pool hopping

Well the rainfall we had, has done absolutely nothing for the river levels. I think the hills are so dry, they`ve soaked up every drop that fell and nothing has filtered into the system. I took my 7 footer and Konic reel, loaded with a 2wt DT line and a spool of 3lb fluorocarbon. Fishing the pools with an upstream dry ( an Olive Para #14), I picked off the odd small trout, to the end of the golf course, paid a visit to the golfball tree, then fished two wets back down. I had an S/T gold head on the point, and I stuck with olive, a copper ribbed spider both #16. This is where it got crazy, almost every cast took a trout albeit small, especially the gold head, even a few double hook ups. Lost count of the numbers and eventually gave up. I think we`ll have to find somewhere else for Friday`s session.

This was the best catch of the day
Peter

Re: Pool hopping

Hi Dave, believe it or not, I`ve got two mates who went to a trout fishery bait fishing, and all they caught, was one rainbow and lots of perch. What size were the brownies?

Re: Pool hopping

Thanks Justin, knew you`d get that double figure, really well done.

Hi Jeff, yeah it was good fun, river`s still very low, I think there were bits where you could walk across, without getting your feet wet.
We`re off to Malta for 3 weeks on the 24th of this month, so it will be fishing Maltese style. I`m also taking the 7`0" fly rod, but need to get 1lb leader or less if pos. I tied some #22 flies like small crustaceans for going, eyes were almost squinty by the time I`d finished. what do you think?

Hope you have a great time on the boat. Peter

hi the biggest was just shy of a pound 13oz they come from a stocked syndicate further up river so are just rogue trout from there but they offer some cracking sport specially when they jump clear of the water amazing.

Re: Pool hopping

Hi jeff, My son`s taking his lap top, so I`ll let you know how it`s going. The locals use telescopic poles 4-7 metres in length and for bait, mix up a paste made up of goodness knows what. If I`m bait fishing, I use this stuff, it`s a bit expensive, but deadly.

You cut off about 4mm and bait your hook shank, leaving the hook exposed. I don`t know if it`s available here, haven`t seen it in any of the tackle shops.

Re: Pool hopping

Nice report and pics Peter. Those flies look very realistic - will be interested to hear your report once you have tried them. They do look similar to some of the things that inhabit my y-fronts by the way..and have a nice holiday..
