Sunday afternoon. Reached the river about 11.45, the kit I decided on was my 8`0" Vision Intro 3/4wt and Lamson Konic 3/4 reel loaded with a hardy premier 2wt DT line, no chance of being over gunned with that set up. Not a lot of rises on the water, so I set up 2 wets on 3lb fluoro.leader #16 olive spider top and a #16 red ribbed black on point. 2nd cast small brown took the red & black, as did the next 4. I`m glad I scaled down, 2 x 1/4lbers made the day on the light tackle. I started here ![]() ![]() ![]() And finished here ![]() That`s about it really Peter. ![]() ![]()

Re: Sunday afternoon. Hi Jeff, nice photos and fish and that water looks really great. Ours` is getting to the point, where we really need a sustained rainfall, to flush away the filamentous weed, this is a real problem with low water levels. The fly I think is a Grannom, but I`m not too good on fly names. Again well done with the fish. Peter ![]() Hi BW, thanks for the comments, glad you like them. Peter ![]()

Re: Sunday afternoon. Peter and Jeff, great pics and reports. Is that still the Kelvin Peter? - I do miss fly fishing on the rivers - just not enough hours in a day, or days in a week to do all the fishing I want, so will have to stick to carp and pike methinks, then again - a nice lottery win would allow me to retire and fish full time! We can only dream..Barry

Re: Sunday afternoon. Hi Baz T, yep it`s the Kelvin again, we`ve done most of our fishing there this season so far. We have a couple of days heavy rain forecast, so that should freshen things up a bit. A few weeks time and the river will be at it`s majestic best, looking great. We`re quite lucky in the West of Scotland, as you`ll know there are so many rivers within easy reach of Glasgow, sometimes you forget that most anglers, are not that lucky. What`s your best carp and pike to date? I`ve never caught a carp, and my best pike is 3.1/2lbs, caught just behind Partick Thistles football ground in the canal. Peter ![]()

Re: Sunday afternoon. Hi Peter, only started carp fishing last year, and pike fishing this winter, having given up sea fishing last summer. Best carp to date is 12lb 8oz, on a free lined floating chum mixer, which was quite a good size for the lake I fish. Now I am a bit more experienced am hoping to try some speciment lakes this summer for the bigger fish. Apart from 40 years ago, this was my first winter after pike, and the biggest was only 7lb 8oz. Hoping to do better next winter as once again I have got a bit more experience now. A lot of people fly fish for pike and perch in one of shallower canals (up by Tiverton) and are quite successful at it. Did you catch the pike on fly? I did enjoy sea fishing, particularly boat fishing, but was getting fed up with lots of trips cancelled due to bad weather etc, though over the years I have had some decent fish when boat fishing - cod 26lb, brill 8lb, pollack 21lb, ling 22lb, coalfish 20lb, conger 65lb, black bream 3lb 10oz. I used to like using fairly light gear 12lb boat rod, 30lb braid, (apart from when conger fishing) which was great fun, no matter what size of fish was on the end. Other places I used to fly fish for trout as a youngster were the River Carron and Carron dam area in the Campsie Hills, and there were 2 or 3 artesian wells in the Campsie hills north of Milton of Campsie, and East of Lennoxtown. It took about 45 mins, possibly more, to walk to the artesian wells from Lennoxtown, but they werent fished that often, and had some big trout in them. If I didnt fancy fly fishing, I used to catch some minnows (large ones) and use them as bait - caught one trout about 3lb on a sink and draw minnow at the Artesian wells. The wells were right out in the middle of nowhere, and were about half as narrow Lennoxtown Whitefield dam, but a bit longer. I assume they are still there somewhere in the hills. Also Lennoxtown reservoir (a very small reservoir !!!) probably about 50yards x 50yards square, by the edge of the golf course also had trout in it apparently but never did see one caught.

| Re: Sunday afternoon. Nice fish Baz, each and every one a personal best too, must be chuffed with that list. I only got back into fishing about 8 years ago, as between work and playing in a band most nights, it didn`t leave much time for anything else. But thoroughly enjoying it, now I have the time, much more relaxing. Years ago we used to fish the small "lochs"(?)in the hills above Faifly near Clydebank, usually about 3am -ahem!- for wild browns, 3 mile hike uphill all the way, oh to be that fit again . | Re: Sunday afternoon. Yep, I used to bound up the hills like a young gazelle, but more like an old hippo nowadays. I play rock n blues guitar(but not in a band - just to backing tracks) - I see you are a musician - what instrument and band did you play in? |
