Re: Whats the best floating line you can get for a good price?

Hi wee man, ive a son your age and he loves fishing. Anyway as your only 12 years old i would advise you 1st spend your 1st penny on lessons on casting before you buy line. There is so much to learn, and this time off year a floating line would not be a good choice as the fish lets say rainbows are on the bottom so for instance i have floating line, sink tip, intermediate, slow sink, medium sink and fast sinking lines for were the fish are. Money well spent, also Calum the right choice of fly is the key with the right line. My advise is years off fly fishing exsperience, rainbows are great fun and with the right instructor teaching you the basics you have something to work on,and then like me you catch salmon on the fly and see the fish take the fly. Tight lines dude.

Re: Whats the best floating line you can get for a good price?

No worries, but as you grow older and you get a blank or two at this time of year you will be on the bottom. Im fly fishing 15years calum and im giving you my experience and a sinking line or a sink tip, thats a floating line with 5feet of tip that sinks. Now young man can you cast a 12-15foot leader thats what you will nead if useing a floating line with say a buzzer or my favourite a minkie, as at this time of year the fish are down deep ie frost calum puts them down. I had 16 rainbows yesterday. A tip buying line, there is a lot of rubbish fly line out there mate and i wouldnt hang my clothes on it. If you can beg your dad as you can buy in my opinion the best for £35-£40 cortland fly line and it will last you years, i changed mine after 11years because i looked after it cleaned it after every use. Keep me posted and i will help you catch when others are not, legaly of course. Another tip, if the guy beside you is catching ask him what fly but the most important part of your tackle is your fly line not just who made it but is he useing floating line sinking line etc. A change of fly line can be the difference between 1 fish and my record 42 rainbows in one day drove those that didt mad, all they had to do was ask, they all blanked. Tight lines. Paul.

WOW thats a lot of fish of one day the most ive cought in a day is 4 or 5!
And about the sinking line, me and my dad bought our self some slow sink line its pritty cheap line but its is easy to get out (unlike my floating line) but i think ill take up your advise and ask for some new line for christmas!
Im going fishing on tuesday so ill try your going deep advise and should i use a bite indicator or just a slow figure of 8?
Calum

Re: Whats the best floating line you can get for a good price?

I use a slow sink line for salmon in my club river calum, i wouldnt use it for rainbows. Start a picture of the lake in your head were you want to fish, and the only purpose of the fly line is were are the fish are they onthe top are they on the bottom, but word to the wise on a very hot day and a very cold day ie ice rainbows are on the BOTTOM calum. So on them days a floating line is not your 1st joice. It also depends on how deep it is ie say if the deepest part is 14 feet at those times very hot and ice a fast sinking line NO indicater calum. Now same thing but deepest part in another lake is say 6 feet a floating line with 12 foot leader not to light of a leader lost fish i use 8lb min sightfree G3 flourocourbon. Find out for me if you are allowed to use a boobie if not find a lake that you can and get back to me its deadly at this time of year. Remember golden rule calum the whole idea of floating, sinking etc is to get to the fish, your reel to hold line your rod to play the fish and your fly to catch the fish. I have so much knowledge on rainbows and how to catch them,so if you are allowed use the boobie get back to me. The 1st secret is the right line float, intm, sink fly 2nd. Paul.

Re: Whats the best floating line you can get for a good price?

I forgot calum on intermediate line can be a very good fly line if fish are mid water. Try this sometime, your dad ii going to kill me as i will cost him a fortune but you will catch more fish trust me, i also 4got to say to you dont forget backing b4 you put on fly line, i have seen my backing once or twice. Anyway say you have intermediate line on your reel, put on a 7 foot leader 8lb flourocourbon and put on a gold head hairs ear tied on a size 12 or 14 hook. Now another huge tip dont stand right up to the bank, stad back 10-15 feet as most rainbows will follow you close in and if they see you no fish and if they dont see you they will 9 times out of ten take your fly. Cast out 1st cast count to 5 retrieve if nothing do again but count to 10 and so on and if you leave long enough your line will be on the bottom. Now calum retrieve is the key here, lets say your like me right handed after cast and count we sharp jerks 4-5 inches at a time but quick wrist action, pause every now and then say 4-5 seconds, and remember if you feel and you will a pluck dont strike to quick keep it moving strike slowly not to fast you will pull hook out of fish. That callum is a deadly method. Remember not two days rainbow fishing is the same. I had 12 double figure rainbows in a worst poss day for fishing everyone on the dry blanked. Remember if it works dont change it. Ps i might write a book.

Re: Whats the best floating line you can get for a good price?

Hey
when i went fishing (on when ever the day was i said) well any way i blanked but it was a new fishery that i had never fished at before. but it was a very hard day because it had been hot but the day we went it was -2 degrees. and because i dont have any warm thermals or waterproofs i was frezing. so didnt enjoy it that much but also it was really weedy so couldnt go that deep.
I also went fishing today for a few hours and i had a 6lb brown but i dnt have a photo. i was well happy about that!!!!
