Question Stocked Rainbows

I've have a question that needs resolving?
Can anyone enlighten me about stocked trout. Do they reproduce/ are they infertile. I have asked a couple of people this and got completly different answers?

Arrow Re: Stocked Rainbows

Now i have somthing to add that as totally smashed my head. Right, we now decided stockies don't reproduce? Ok i've fished my local today and by shear co-insidence i caught a rainbow about three quarters of a pound. The fishery was taken on five years ago, rented from united utilities. So this must mean that their was Rainbows already in the water before it was Stocked by my club??? Very strange! Its in the middle of nowhere.

Re: Stocked Rainbows

Rainbows are immigrants from North American and there are very few places in the UK that they can breed wild with any great degree of success. Brownies are a different matter , hence all them tiny little trout you often see in small streams (they're brownies). Not saying it's not possible they can breed just that they can in only a few places. Stockies are like married women, they've lost the urge to mate at all ;)
Oh boy I hope Mrs BB never reads that.

Re: Stocked Rainbows

Most stocked trout are triploids to control stock numbers, however one fishery, a certain Farletonview near Milnthorpe, Cumbria, contains rainbows that actually reproduce. The fish tend to spawn in the margins on the northern bank, and you'll often catch small rainbows during early season.

Thank for the answer it will come in use i am sure. I can put a few Chaps i know, straight now. since i first asked this question, i have had chance to talk to are man in charge of stocking. He thinks that the little bugger i caught was one of last years fry that was stocked for feed that managed to avaide being munched up.

Re: Stocked Rainbows

My heviest rainbow is 18lb 8oz average 12lb on a size 22 grey duster at a fishery called stonefalls, no not usa but 15 miles down the road. Had 18 rainbows 2day on the booby different place as he doesnt allow the booby for some strange reason ie its deadly. No differece what you use and 98% of my fish caught on the booby were lip caught. The only difference btween a hairs ear and a booby is the patern, they all have a hook in them no matter what fly you use. Any way regarding Pleccy is spot on. Remember golden rule for those who dont know from here on in till feb rainbows are down on the bottom so thats were you need to be. Best ie booby, bloodworm, hairs ear, black buzzer. Tight lines. Paul

Re: Stocked Rainbows

RAINBOW TROUT
Triploids or diploids, they are trout that have been genetically
enineer`d by man. triploids are normally all female, while diploids are a mixed
lot that is both m/f. There are two treatments one is a warm water treatment, and the other is by a pressure treatment. This treatment divides
the cell embryo into two called (diploid) or three called (triploids), this treatment is carried out egg incubation stage, from a fertile egg.the
chromosomes are altered and stops them breeding, they are know`n as 3n
They become an eating machine, they are never out of condition, and put on a lot of weight quickly, no breeding cycle.they can be released in any river as they do not breed they do not cause hybridization.( Diploid and triploid brown trout). Two chromosomes from female one from male, as in humans, i think
at my age that all i can do think
