Re: smoothounds around torbay?

Not heard of any being caught recently. Hopes nose and surrounding areas seem to be best and I've even seen one caught from Princess pier.

Re: smoothounds around torbay?

The smoothhounds should start showing around july, thats when i normally catch them off of teignmouth anyway. Great fun on float rods, light tackle, crab as bait(either peeler or hermit) just make sure the drag is set!!

Talking Re: smoothounds around torbay?

is it true about watching rods disappear off the tripods when they bite because i always fish with the ratchet set on and watch for nods, if it is true, i am a little worried about losing my rod if one of these things attack.

hows the best way to go about getting them?

Re: smoothounds around torbay?

i think that it def can be said about smoothhounds that they can and will take the rods if given the chance. ive caught most of my smoothounds on the boat about 100 yards to half a mile off of the ness beach, and they do try there best to rip line off the reel.

ive also caught smoothounds from hopes nose and long quarry, i just used a small beachcaster, light line (as you would for dogfish), simple running ledger and some sort of crab for bait. off of the nose, i caught them whilst fishing for dabs etc.

the thing i found is sometimes they are there, and sometimes they are not, so a little bit of patience is needed.

Re: smoothounds around torbay?

As alot didnt realise the smoothhounds didnt travel this far down, i am just posting a report to say that they have started to catch smoothhounds off hopes nose at the weekend. So get yourself some crab etc and head down if you fancy one!!
