smutt help!!

Hi All,

I know im early but i want to get the bits early for the season to begin.
Now this is my first year im gona try for soothhounds, they sound brilliant fun?
I know a little but not enougth about them, so any advice to those who have caught them would be much appreciated on rigs, bait, tides, weather etc.... As i say this is the first time im going to try for them i know the season is early may? and crab baits tend to be the best and wide gage hooks and to make sure i leave my bail arm up or drag on as it will be good by rod and reel. But thats all i know. thanks in advance.

Andy

Re: smutt help!!

Hello mate, fishing for smuts is as simple as it gets really.
I use pulley rigs with 3ft 40-50lb snoods with like you say a good strong single wide gauge hook 3-4/0 in size.
Crab is the preferred bait but you will also catch them on squid and rag.
When using crab there is no need for large baits.
They usually arrive down here about early May but the best months are June and July.
Another top tip is don't wander to far from your rod or it will scoot off to the Isle of Wight

That would be brilliant if you dont mind as its new to me and could do with the advice, i so need one of those to add to my species list.
I will PM you my number and sling us a txt or call whenever your going.
Also if you dont mind me asking i use 15lb main line and use a tapered shockleader 16lb to 60lb i use a double blood knot to tie these together but the knot has gone on me a couple of times before when ive been caught up etc.. Im just worried that if i do hit in to a decent smutt i dont want the same thing to happen. Can you reccomend a knot to use?

Cheers Mate Andy

I use 18lb F1 and Ultima shockleader with the leader blobbed with a lighter

never had it go though two of those smutts did snap a 3/0 big mouth clean in half !

( number noted mate )
