Smoothound fishing from a boat

Ok this is my way of catching Smoothound

The best bait I have found is hermit crab

Just gently crack the shell open remove the hermit and place on the hook - if plentiful two on one hook works best

Never leave the bait longer than 10-15 minutes as the sent trail dies away

If not uptiding then use the lightest weight possible and bounce the bait away from the boat - settle on the bottom then lift and let out line till it settles again

Smoothound are pack fish i.e swim with others so when one comes then the rest of the fish will follow

Use a heavy trace they have teeth - but not wire there is no need - 60lb mono trace will do

Smoothound aren't great eaters so strike early and hook them in the mouth un hook and return as quickly as possible

Smoothound are great fighters on light tackle

Anymore advice add it to this post

great info Richard... :well:

I've heard Selsey beach is good for them when hunting from the shore ?

I've caught 'em in Ireland, and would love to target them again from the beach...

the smuts have started to show on the pagham side of selsey in the last week or two only small male fish at the mo to 14lb .But given the settled warm weather and the bigger tides in the coming week i expect the females to appear also hopefully some of the big black bream we had last year. These were huge for shore fish for down here with the average size 2lb running to 4lb great fishing!!
