Hi, Welcome to the forum

Are you shore or boat fishing?.. if boat fishing a level wind is ok as you will not not be casting more than 40-50 yards away from the boat.

If shore fishing then i would suggest a multiplier as they are big fish and regularly weigh in excess of 30lbs a fixed spool reel won't cope with that weight of fish. My pal caught one of over 40lbs in the recent festival and didn't win anything. You must use wire traces becasue they will bite clean through. Or 150-200lb mono or fluro carbon anything less and.... goodnight Vienna!

Hope this helps.

Re: tope fishing

Uptider and and a good quality multiplier (ABU 7000 min size ) are essential .Keep the end gear simple, running ledger,4 ft trace of heavy (150lb plus )mono or good quality wire.a decent tope is capable of taking a lot of line and cheap reels aren`t really up to the job, i`d sugest buyin the best you can afford.Hooks need to be good quality and barbless (not stainless steel ).Stick to mono for uptiding, braid will give you more headaches, and it is not stretchy either, this increases the chance of tope spiting the hook when you apply pressure during the fight especially, braid can give you problems during the fight wwith the pressure on it can dig into itself on the spool ,cause a mini jam up ,and twang !!!...the fish snaps you off.Mono stretches and gives you a better cushion should anything go wrong.

Re: tope fishing

hi fished for tope just outside barbouth this year (second year in a row) only using 30lb class boat rods with ocuma 30L(300L) multipliers with level wind with 25lb diawa sensor mono rigs i got from ardwell marine in scotland just put a search in google for the tel no good rigs and well made only £1.99 , we had a great weeks fishing again only a mile from the shore , quote article in sea angler magazine for august i think will have to check , we boated at least 30 tope in 4 days on the boat lots of 30`s 40`s and 50`s also 2 at 70lb and a massive one at 75lb only 8lb off the welsh record , they are awsome fish to catch with loads of power , the best fighting fish ive ever come across , i think you`d do better with lighter gear its much more fun than using a 80lb broom handle \ hope you get lucky i`m sure looking forward to my tope trip next year 2009 \\\ tight lines \\ matt
