Summer 2005 Gower Smoothhound Sessions

Its unfortunately a bit late in the season now but next summer I will happily take those of you who want smoothhound action from the shore to 4 very likely spots on the Gower.

These are;

Worms Head - This is an island with amazing bass fishing over the rough ground causeway and reef on the left hand side but also great smoothhound possibilities on the right of the island. You are cut off here 3hrs either side of high water. Fishing from comfortable ledges we would be fishing into at least 40ft of water over clean ground. These ledges offer mackerel, dogfish, smoothhound and occasional ray or tope. Just a mile off Worms Head is the Helwick Bank (a brillaint spot for rays, bass, turbot on the boats).

Tor Point - A difficult climb down onto some ledges enough room for 4 comfortably. This mark has rocks and mussel beds close in and again very deep water over clean ground. Gurnards, bass, plaice, turbot, small eyed ray, mackerel, garfish, dofish are prominent here but it looks IDEAL for smoothies - I have never targetted them here but can assure you it would work!

Rhossili Ledges - Very popular with mackerel feathering tourists there are a number of ledges here. This mark onloy ever has a reputation for mackerel and whiting but I have caught a number of smoothhound, dogfish, pollack and a bullhuss here and am itching to try it at night for smoothies! Involves taking a path down the side of a cliff so absolute care would be required for a night session here!

Bluepool - Yet another set of ledges over clean ground into deep water - noticing the smoothhound territory trend here!! Also has a good reputation for smoothies! They used to catch big shore tope here aswell but dont think anyone has bothered targeting them in the last 10yrs! As with all these venues night sessions will probably be best BUT none of these marks are particularly easy to get to and remain safe without local knowledge.

Re: Summer 2005 Gower Smoothhound Sessions

its brilliant! wanna secure the rod and tripod though coz these fish pick up a bait and run hard! even the small ones. its as if they are raiding the bait at top speed!
