Re: Summer 2005 Gower Smoothhound Sessions

I have caught smoothounds from Worms Point, Rhossili ledges and Rhossili beach during late summer evening/night trips on crab and mackerel baits. I have not caught one over 4lbs at any of those marks. Thats not to say they aren't there though. I regulary caught 10lb plus fish off my boat at Aberthaw so they are around.

Besides that, Worms Head is just mystical to fish on a summers eve - I once saw a 40lb sun fish (Mola mola) leaping sideways through the smooth summer swell about 75m off the right hand side of the head. It was a bizarre sight.

Fond memories indeed.

Welcome to the forum sounds if you know some good 'hot spots'.

Nice to see another member from Wales. We'll have to get some S. Wales trip meetings organised. Beach and/or boat

Thumbs up Re: Summer 2005 Gower Smoothhound Sessions

My marks come from persistance and luck...but I am a great believer in finding out what species are in an area and targetting them specifically.
I am presently trying to find a hot mark in the Severn Estuary Cardiff area for big conger...I mean over 25lb. So its out with the charts and gps and fish finder and put the hours in. Am presently consistantly getting 10lbers - had 4 conger and 4 codling last Sunday so hopefully am getting close to finding the bigguns.

Re: Summer 2005 Gower Smoothhound Sessions

Hi , i have shore caught Smoothounds to 10lb off Aberthaw and Monkash and had a few to 7lb off the Blue Pool, they all seem to be smaller around the Gower allthough have heard of people catching them in nets off Cefn Sidan up to 10lb. If you fish off the Blue Pool you can use light gear as its over clean ground. The larger fish seem to head up and around Monknash, Stout, Aberthaw but its a tackle graveyard but is well worth it.
