No Clue is on a distinguished road
Birthday Pressie

Hi all,

Never posted on any forum before - all a bit new to me! I was after some advice on sets / kits. I am wanting to get my old man set up with a kit for his 60th birthday coming up soon and I don't have any clue where to start. I have read up on some other threads about specials but they are no longer available (for the ones I have looked at anyway) - my budget is about £130ish and he doesn't have anything at the moment. I have also read some of the advice re reels / line etc but in all honesty it is like reading greek to me...

Is this a realistic budget to get someone started? Can anyone recommend any online shops with good deals on at the mo? - esp idiot proof ones? (for me and him...)

thanks

Welcome to the forum.
You should get quite a good starter kit for that sort of money. Plenty available in magazines like Salmon & Trout or Trout fishermen. Or try looking at:

Sportfish http://www.sportfish.co.uk/

John Norris http://www.johnnorris.co.uk/

Bennetts of Sheffield http://www.bosfish.co.uk/

For general flyfishing I suggest you start with a 9' 6'' mid to tip action carbon rod rated for a number 7# or 8# line. This will be OK for most stillwaters or large river fisheries. One matching reel, with 2 spools will cover most situations.
For lines a weight forward floater & weight forward medium sinking line & an assortment of wet & dry flys. Any of the above shops should be able to give good advice. Most Trout commercial fisheries will advise on & sell suitable flys for their waters.
A landing net is also an essential item.
Sundry items like flyline backing & tippet are included with most kits.
