Re: Fly Fishing for Roach?

I've not heard of this. You;d have a better chance with Rudd as they feed off the surface sometimes and have a mouth that is designed to eat things from the surface.

Thumbs up Re: Fly Fishing for Roach?

Pike pirate did it on a regular basis last summer,he posted some reports up in this thread(i think). It was just to get some casting practice in at first then he caught a few, norra lot,and not massive. But it worked.
As to tactics, get them feeding off the top(can only talk about ponds cos that's what was fished)floating line,a fly to match your groundbait,ie a maggoty type or a one that has a passing resemblance to a caster cast into the maelstrom? created and fanny's yer aunt.

Found that post

Took my kids to a pond near where I live,my 6yr old daughter and my 15 yr old son.First time for the lass but she struck and hit 21 roach in 2 hrs, even put her own maggots on.Now loves it of course.
Any way Jack has just taken up fly fishing so he thought it's a good idea to get some casting practise in and put a size 14 midge on,up they pop and on they go,just small roach but, taking fly off the top,and it was'nt just the midge. He changed fly several times and they all took fish ,so he enjoyed a good 2 hrs as well.

and there's roach , pike ,perch and the odd carp in there i usually just put a float on with a single maggot does the trick but now am fly fishing an its worth a try

I've had small Roach & Dace using a size 16 black Gnat or Grey Duster fly. But you will have better sport with Rudd. It's a good way to sharpen your reflexes.... Good luck.

i'll agree wi that,
we used to catch the odd one on the test on mid summer evenings usually on small flys such as bwo or late towards autumn on cooler evenings on iron blues.

the ex keeper on my estate used to swear blind that eels would come to houghton rubys, occasionally, on those hot balmy evenings in august
but i never saw it done.

If you have Pike in the water give them a go. Pike like a big blingey type fly. They are a bit like Londoner's
