Re: Tench of the top

No thinking back I can't remember catching any Tench off the top.
I have always suspected it was because their small red eyes are very sensitive to bright light hence their preference of moving into deeper water as the sun reaches its highest point (even on undisturbed venues) and then coming back into the shallows in the evenings and early mornings; but this might be totally wrong, especially in water with lots of colour in it.

Re: Tench of the top

I have heard of tench taking emergers, and small dry flies, but always in the evenings and very low light conditions.
I've also had a bream on a dry fly, I had to get the ale in asa punishment.

Re: Tench of the top

Not here. Never even caught one on the drop. My tench have all been from a bait nailed to the deck. SEEN them on the top many times though, when they go in to tenchy randy sessions and are near them tree roots breeding. I love tench that's why they are on my list for the summer, been FAR too long since I held a little tinca.
