tench rods?

I use the standard 1.25tc section of my JW Avon rod for feeder fishing for bream aswell, it allows you to cast further and slightly heavier feeders than the Quiver tip section and cope with strong flow. but its good for tench and carp to 10/12lb too on the float.

Having only caught around 20 Tench up to 7lb, and all whilst fishing for Carp, I may be showing my ignorance here. But why do you need any more than 1.75 TC for Tench?
I would have thought that would have taken the sport out of it. I can understand if you are using a 2 or 2.25lb for all round fishing with Carp and Barbel up to 20lb, but for Tench that are normally less than 7lb, seems OTT.

Yes I agree with P.P.; 1.7lb should be ample for the biggest Tench; the only time I would be tempted to go heavier is if I am fishing at long range on a big reservoir like Startops at Tring with a 2oz plus lead; when I might go up to 2lb or 2¼lb TC. to help me pull the hook home easier at range; or maybe if I am fishing in a lake like the notorious 'Tip' at Darenth in Kent (amongst really dense weed).
However 95% of the time a rod wth a TC of between 1.25lb and 1.7lb should easily be able to handle big Tench in most situations.

i'd stick to the float rods traditional tench fishing as its getting colder tench can be very sensitive feeders. they'd be put off by a 10-15gr feeder splashing about in the water. i'd recomend the drennan mk4 tench float rod, its deffinatly the pic of the bunch for me, with an extra foot added on from last years model it adds more control over the fish with extra flexibility. its better balanced and makes a better rod for playing really large fish. ideal lines would be from 2.5lb up to 8lb monos or braid.

I have gone fro an old skool aproach and bougth some Daiwa Sensor Graphite 1.75lb tc, but these really do bend and are nearly 20 years old!
My jammy brother has managed to get a pair of Prodidgy rods, so am going round to see what they are like!
Any other recomendations are most welcome!

Seriously, I have caught tench (to 8-12) with all sorts of rods - greenheart rods, split-bamboo rods, glass rods, carbon rods, tubular steel rods, match rods, spinning rods, feeder rods, waggler rods, touch-leger rods, bush poles, cane roach poles, modern carbon poles and even with a fly rod.

If you get the end tackle right, it is surprising how unimportant the choice of rod becomes.
