Specimen Tench Quest

My quest for a Specimen tench continues tonight after work, as I'll have a chance to fish "the Little" again. I was speaking to one of the regulars down there earlier this week and he tipped me off that prawns are the bait to use if I want to latch onto the really big fish - He's had one of 8lbs out last weekend. At first it struck me as a rather expensive bait, but actually you can get a big frozen bag at tesco's for £2.00 these days. I've left them to defrost in a bucket of water, I'll then use the water to make up some fishy smelling groundbait..with a bit of luck it should pull plenty of fish into the swim. I'll post on here and let you know how it goes.... Wish me luck!

Re: Specimen Tench Quest

I always add a good cupful of molasses to my groundbait when I'm after Tench. It works with brown crumb and the usual sample hookbaits but I'm not sure how if would blend with prawn juice. It might overpower it altogether. Best of luck.

Re: Specimen Tench Quest

At Last I got one!!! It's was my 4th attempt to connect with one of the big tench and this time it was succesful. I chose a new swim where the water is quite deep right up to the margins and fed some nice dark fishy based groundbait and some mashed prawn.
It took about and hour and a half to get the first bite but it was well worth it as i struck into a very heavy fish which headed straight for the flag iris beds. At one point I thought it was stuck, but a poke with the landing net handle did the trick and eventually my new PB Tench was gasping on the bank..all 6lb 2oz of it

Later on I managed a little 3lb Mirror (that will be another 1.5 points for the saucy minnows!) and a really good sized common,

but it was the Tench that made my night!! Now I just can't wait to catch some more!!
