| Teign fishing: other options? Hullo to Teign fishers! I was delighted to see some discussion about fishing in the Teign when I found this forum. Someone to share my misery with! I am a failed bass fisher: I have tried everything: spinning and live bait and mostly from a boat just outside the estuary, but nothing apart from mackerel which I am sick of the sight of! I noted the excellent guide posted in this forum recently to the various other locations in the Teign for bass and will give them a try. Having said that, I am cooling to the idea of bass fishing: the last time I checked with the Environment Agency I spoke to Chris Lawson (0845 9333111) who told me that bass fishing from a boat from May 31st to Oct 31st was not allowed and that there was a size restriction of 36 cms on any bass caught either from the shore or in or near the estuary from a boat. I am surprised there are no notices up about this as the fines are quite heavy. So I am thinking there are plenty of other fish in the sea, like grey mullet for instance. Lovely sport and excellent in the pot too! Nor are they a threatened species as far I am aware. Someone said to try the rocks South of the Ness Beach, but surely they come up river. Any sightings, anybody? The other options too are the salmon and the sea trout (with rod licences of course). An elderly neighbour caught a good sized salmon years ago spinning down by Coombe Cellars. Any more recent experiences? Cheers thefatsprat |

| Re: Teign fishing: other options? The other week, i thought i saw a mullet around the pontoon area of the river, but since then the wind and the rain came. I was in the river yesterday and no sign of any fish at all, but then again you couldnt see through the brown water. when the mullet do come in the river and start feeding, you will catch them near enough anywhere, ranging from the back beach to newton abbot docks, i would suggest trying lower down the river because the higher river depends on teh colour of the water etc. Ive never actually caught a mullet from the rocks on the ness beach but have had several wrasse, smoothound, bass and mackerel, so it is worth a try. when the summer comes the teign will be alive with all sorts of fish, i find the fish quay when you can get on it produces everything, from here i have caught mullet, mack, scad, flounder, gurnard, wrasse, bass, gar, whiting, red mullet and gold/grey mullet. you could normally target all these fish in one day using a float. The fish quay is my fav mark on the teign but you have to fight the holiday makers and the little kids crabbing, best time is an early high water when everyone is still in bed. __________________ Nothing grows faster than a fish from when it bites until it gets away. |
