New to Beach Fishing

We have decided to try beach fishing and will probably fish West Bay or around that area. We are also the proud owners of two rods etc. and on the way home called into the local public watering hole and the landlord asked where was the shot length (think that he was saying) on our reel. It was something to do with being a lot stronger than the line and you tied it to your line and then your weights and hook to the stronger line so that your line did not break.

Anyway enlighten me as to what he was talking about please. Also, if there is anybody fishing West Bay who would be prepared to show me what to do I would be grateful.

Cheers. Roy

Re: New to Beach Fishing

shockleader.. normally a length of 50lb mono used to take the strain when castin so one of us proper anglers don't get hit in the back of the head with a 5 ounce lead on chesil

west bexington and cogden are fishing well for plaice .. always worth a look in daylight with asome fresh ragworm

Hi Roy.

I live in Weymouth and at the moment I am fishing the Western end of Chesil, although not West Bay, more West Bexington and Cogden. I will be fishing there a few days next week. More than happy to give you a few pointers.

I wouldn't mind joining you to ask what are probably stupid questions. What day and time do you think you would be going. I have looked at the map and found West Bexington. Cheers.

That,s Steve in the picture. Just look for us in our kilts lol.

seriously. I am also likely to go on Sunday as well, but I will be well gone by 7. Plaice fishing is far better during daylight. PM me and will give you my mobile.

Re: New to Beach Fishing

Misty, seriously - befire you go lobbing any thing with a weight attached to it into the sea make sure you have a shock leader, general rule of thumb is that it should be 10lb of breaking strain fior every 1oz of weight, so a 6oz lead weight will require 60lb shock leader. It should be long enough to reach from your rig when casting back to your reel and a few turns around the reel too. Also - do not use snap swivels in the line - all the components of your rig body - everything from the weight, the clips to the rig, the rig body, (ie use line of, say 80lb breaking strain for the main rig line), and the clips/swivels used to connect to your shock leader should be of similar strength. No weak points.

See here for more info - Shockleader – Fishing Line Part 2
