I went to Berry head last week, being disabled i cant possible walk all the way down, on showing my badge they have always let disabled people drive down. Imagine my horror to find the gateway blocked by a huge yellow steel pole. i was told to get past it i would have to pay £30. When i got home i phoned the people in charge and had a right old row with some dip stick, but he was just plain nasty. Bye bye berry head
The barrier was paid for out of the 4 million pounds they got from the lottery.

Hi Paul, its nice to be back, Ive been quite ill this last 12 months, the old ticker gave out last november after year of abuse. But with this nice weather im getting itchy feet for a bit of fishing again. Now Berry head is denied to me im left with babbacombe pier and meadfoot as the only marks i can easily get too.

Hi Foggy,
It maybe worth your while getting back to the authorities and quoting part three of the Disability Discrimination Act, whereas a service provider has legal responsiblity to make reasonable adjustments to allow for disabled access, If the area is open to abled bodied persons and not to persons with disabilities ( which it is effectively doing) thats is a discriminative act,
There is also a little known law which relates to an ancient law of custom and practise, ie if it has been the custom or practice in the past to allow access to certain groups (I believe its a minimum of above 8 years) the forbibbing of a established actively without reasonable cause can be subject to civil court action, You could also ask the local press to make a issue of thier actions.. We in Dorset have a good Disability Action Group, maybe thier is such a group in Devon who could assist you.
I have for many years wished that some forward thinking person would publish a book geared towards the disabled angler on accessible places to fish, which could include, parking, toilets nearest phonebox etc.
Time to get off my soapbox now eh!

regards

Re: berry head

Redcap, Thank you for the ideas and info, i like the idea of claiming discrimination, get a picture of some disabled kids holding fishing rods and crying and were home n dry. Although it isnt discrimination because the able bodied cant take cars down under any circumstances. However it certainly was established practice, ive been going down there for years with my car. lots of food for thought.
