Re: Introduce yourself a bit more!

Old Smoothound - Shaun,

Yep mate I am from Bristol but moved across the water to Chepstow last December. I work in Bristol every day and play hockey / watch football in Bristol - I support the City and cannot stand those scabby *ankers bristol rovers - just to clear that up !!

Where do you fish in the cod season mate ? If youve got some regualr marks that you try let me know Id be well up for meeting and fishing regularly through the winter.

I usually manage a few trips out in Weston on our Warrior 165 ( 17ft boat ) you would be welcome to join us as and when we go out. Looking at joining the boat club in Portishead and fishing there a few times this winter - they had good cod catches last year - Weston was rubbish !

Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi mate,

No problem we can meet up for a few cod sessions when tides are right will look at them tonite and let you know.

There are some good boat fishing cod marks in the channel, you can launch from Beachley (undernerneath old severn bridge)as its FREE. Bass and Sole in summer months. Bass can be good fishing. Sole needs a relatively small tide.

Sand banks off Redwick is the place, but be warned if you don't know the area you can get left high and dry!

I'd love to come out with you on your Warrior, whats the boat like? i am looking at buying a boat soon need a bit more time to save the money!!

Cheers
Shaun

Wink Re: Introduce yourself a bit more!

Shaun / Rich,

Warrior 165 are beautiful boats - built for fishing and designed with the fisherman in mind. Its a relatively cheap boat and comes from Lancashire. Where I have ours moored in Exmouth there are two others. They come in three sizes I think - ours is the 165 and funnily enough its 16. 5ft.

They usually take outbaords upto about 75horse but we have a Mercury 60 bigfoot - goes at 30 knotts top speed which is fast enough I can tell you.

Launches off a towable trailor and effectively it can be launched and retrieved by one person - really really easy with two.

I think the basic costs are about 5 grand to which you need to add the outboard. Brand new they increase the price to about 10 or 11 grand but we got our outboard through Boats & outboards - two years old, less than 50 hours for only 2 grand !!

Cant find their web address but e mail is as follows :

warriorboats@tinyworld.co.uk

They send out a good little brochure and they are a very small family business with a growing reputation for excellent boats. Saying that - try the Boats & Outbaords web site they have got some really good Warriors on there recently at very good prices, second hand - usually including fish finders, auxillaries, etc. etc.

Shaun - is the site at Beachley any good 4 bass fishing at this time of the year from the slipway ? Might give it a go with some rag and lug if you reckon its any good. I popped down there but bugger am I going to try boating there - well dodgy currents and local knowledge is a definite - and I have bugger all !!

Hi Mate, no good from the slipway you need to be on shale or sandbank for the Billies!

Try a litle further down in between the bridges can't remember the name of the place, will investigate for you.
Over on our side we do get some from time to time, Littleton has lots of room, and some shale bars casting out circa 50-60 yards. There has been a few earlier on this year in some matches there, circa 2-3lbs, the bigger ones are from the boat. I have had them to 6 1/2lbs last year.

We launch from there all of the time. You cannot launch 1-2 hours after high water, the flow is too strong. However, we get a hell of a lot of Cod in the Channel from our secret marks . Or you can launch from Portishead Marina, as they have a very steep slipway(Gravel) and fees are circa £14 for the lock. Easy if you want to fish Redwick sands or the Clevedon Buoys.

Once you get the hang of the Channel and get to respect it, no problem, minimum 300' of anchor rope including minimum 30 feet of chain!

Its safe so long as you respect the place.

Speak to you soon.

Cheers
Shaun

Red face Re: Bristol sea fishing meet ?

Shaun,

Thanks for the info. If you could let me know the name of the areas just up from Beachley on the welsh side I may give it a go for some bass and codling.

Do you launch your boat from Beachley then - the concrete slipway under the old bridge - alays look well dodgy to me ? If you do what sort of boat have you got then ?

I would be very interested to follow you out and launch off this site - if I can sort this out it will save having to go from Weston all the time. I know secret marks are exactly that but any chance of showing me a few of your marks - fishing for cod last year was crap in Weston. I would love to get out and about in this area and respect of the ocean is what its all about - Exmouth has totally wicked currents and can be very scary as well !

Any help to get out around the bridges would be fantastic mate - let me know what you reckon.

Cheers Shaun

Tommy

Wink Re: Bristol sea fishing meet ?

Hi Tommy,

Best time to launch your boat is on smallish tides. Do not attempt to launch 1-3hrs after high tide on bigger spring tides. The tide will take your boat off the trailer sideways for you.

My pal has a 15 foot Sea Hog and uses a Shogun 4x4 to tow it. We have no trouble at all. In the summer you get a lot of water skiers and jet ski peeps using the slip way... nightmare. But if you pick an early tide you miss them. Usuallly we stay out 12hours.

Once out, stay in the main channel under first bridge, at second do the same, do not attempt to take short cuts as there are some wicked reefs and sand bars. So long as you keep looking at your sounder you will be fine.

Cod and Bass marks up from Beachley will let you know later.

You can come dowm any time and watch us launch when we go out again, will let you know when the next trip is.

Its a good idea to go down to Redwick and have a look at low water, you will see the reefs and sand bars I am talking about.

When the Cod season gets underway, take a pair of Bino,s and look for the Burnham Boats, you won't miss them!!

Speak to you later.

I am off for a BEER!

Cheers
Shaun

Shaun,

Top man ! When you are next out for the day let me know and Ill try and organise for our boat to be ready for the day - after all its safer in groups - especially in the channel.

We could really do with following you out for a few times to get used to the arae if you dont mind ? We use a four * four to launch our boat as well so maybe we arrange a few good trips starting soon for them cod ? Would you mind if we followed you out ?

If you find out any info on land marks for fishing I wouldnt mind knowing - was hoping to get down to Carmarthen this week in the evening but cant. Thought if I know some local land marks I can try these instead.

I look forward to hearing from you mate - hoping to arrange a trip out soonish as the codling are starting to show.

Cheers Shaun.

Tommy
