Cool Re: sun 7th jan

Well, Smallfry and I woke up this morning to the sound of wind and rain. We had guessed that the weather wasn’t gonna be good but nothing was going to put us off today. Equipped with our wet weather gear, we set off to meet up with Kev (Wellyfish) at one of our favourite and easy to fish marks, Oddicombe beach, which we knew would be sheltered by the prevailing S.W wind.

By 6.15am we were fishing. Kev was fishing two light rods with one or two hook scratching rigs and small baits. Mike and I were fishing a little heavier using a two hook clip down with size 1/0 hooks with an assortment of baits and another rod armed with a 4/0 – 2/0 Pennell rig with a whole calamari.

Mikes rod he was watching was the first rod to rattle. After striking it for him he then continued to reel in a nice sized dogfish, which was a first for him.

Whilst dealing with the dogfish, we heard a CRASH. Although my drag was loose on the other rod that didn’t stop the rod crashing to the ground. The line couldn’t come off fast enough, so I was faced with the rod also heading to the sea. I struck and that’s when the fun started. The 6-8oz beach rod was almost doubled up in two, with line still coming off the reel. The fish then headed along the beach and my biggest fear was that I was going to loose the fish around a sign (warning or rock falls, imbedded in the beach). She then changed direction and headed straight back towards me and although I wound like hell to take up the slack. That was the last I felt of her...Gone. All that was left was a chewed calamari.

To say I was gutted, would be putting it mildly. Knowing the beach very well we have no doubts at all that she was a large Bass, very large.

Kev continued to catch a couple more doggies and I was left with another story, of the one that got away.

That’s fishing for ya.

Kiwi.

Re: sun 7th jan

well got down to oddicombe about 6am where kiwi and his lad mike were waiting , there was a little rain but not enough to put us off set up two rods with rag and squid and kiwi set up with whole calamari and another rod for wee mikey , then the bites start and in come the usual doggies , as we are trying to unhook the lads doggie martins rod and rest hit the ground and his rods heading towards the horizon , oh shit martin says , quick, some one grab my rod as hes tangled up in dogfish well saved mike and then passes the rod to his dad what looks like, and feels like one big fishey, and i tell you kiwi aint no wimp and he was strugling to reel this in so ive started to go in to the water to see if i could get hold of moby but as i go to grab the line all i hear is f*** f**** f**** bas**** it got off kiwi has just lost a biggun, in my opinion i would say a bass and judging by the bend of the rod and the effort he was putting in to real it , i would say 8-10lb bass !!! not to worry mate we can try again next week not much else happened apart from some more doggies then rain stopped play ......to be continued !!
