| The plan was to fish at Aust on the Bristol Channel with my usual fishing partner Pete on Saturday as there had been some good reports of Codling being caught there. I'd been contacted by Pingu, Baggie Rich, Geejayy, Twiddler & Mithrandir, saying that they were going to join us. Saturday morning Pete phoned to say that he had hurt his back & would be unable to make it. Mitharandir & Twiddler (Mike & Claudia) had been going to follow us up to Veals in Bristol to get some Bait, as they had not been there before. There was no need for an early start as high water was not until 18.24 in the evening. Mike & Claudia arrived at my house at 11am & as Pete was no longer comming, I managed to squeeze into their car. Got to veals at about midday intending to buy some Lugworm & Squid for bait, as all the reports said this was the bait too use. The first bit of bad news was that Veals had no Lugworm & the second was that according to the man in the shop, it was such a high tide, that Aust was unfishable He said we should try New Passage instead. Made some frantic phone calls to Baggie & Pingu to tell them of the change of plan, but nobody had Geejayys (Gordons) phone number. Luckily, Gordon was not going to join us until later, as he had to work. So Pingu phoned Baitmaster, who sent Gordon a PM, to tell him of the change of plans & luckily Gordon checked his Emails before he left.... Phew....Arrived at New Passage at about 1.30 to find that the Sea was still just a speck on the horizon, & that we had miles of mud between us & any fishable water. However there were a few other people checking out the best spots & setting up their tripods etc, so maybe it was a good thing we had arrived early. Baggie & Pingu arrived soon afterwards, & the good news was that they had some Lug & Crab, so things were looking up. We set up & waited for the Tide, which came in at a speed that had to be seen to be believed. I have been told that the Bristol Channel tide is the second highest tide range in the world & it comes in with a speed to match. Before long we had enough water to fish & all cast out using pully rigs baited with prime Cod baits such as Lug, Squid & Crab. Every one was getting small bites, but not connecting with anything. Word had obviously got around about Cod being caught, as there were about 30 Anglers fishing there. But no one was catching on the incomming tide. Luckily we were treated to a fantastic display of fireworks from accross the Channel from Newport & Chepstow, plus a few behind us from Bristol. Another highlight of the night was that Pingu had remembered to bring some of his famous Pies along Gordon turned up at around 5pm & set up too, but still no fish. High water came & went & we were treated to an amazing sunset, as the sun went down behind the new Severn Bridge. By now, it was getting really cold, but fortunately I discovered a bottle of Ginger Wine in the bottom of my tackle box, that helped ward off the chill & went well with Pingus Biriani flavour pies.... As the tide started to ebb, a few fish began to show. First a silver eel & then some nice Codling. But sadly none to any Forum Members. Interestingly they were all caught on Ragworm, rather than than Lug or Squid. Unfortunately Baggie had to set off early, as he had promised to be back in time for his neices birthday party. Hope you did,nt get in too much trouble mate..... Any way fishing wise, that was about it. We heard that about six or seven Cod had been caught, but none for us. The next plan was to stop off at a nearby pub for a drink. We set off, believing we were following Gordons car. We should have known something was wrong when it went straight past the pub & we followed it for a further 5 miles before losing it. Turned around & went back to the pub, now down to two cars & just Pingu, Claudia, Mike & myself. Ordered a pint & also found out that the pub had a Chinese & Thai resturaunt attached. Well what were we to do??? So although the fishing had been a bit poor, we still had a good laugh, & rounded off the day with a nice Thai meal. Sorry there's no pictures, but my camera's broken. I'm sure the others will add some pics later. I will also leave mike to tell the story about the 20 mile detour on the way home...... __________________ One man's fish is another man's poissons http://www.deepsea.co.uk http://www.wildtrout.org |
