| Best Laid Plans I had to go to meetings in Devon and Cornwall on consecutive days last week so arranged to stay with my sister in Exmouth overnight with the plan to get some fishing in. My first meeting was in Barnstaple and then Ilfracombe so I thought I'd grab some ragworm and head off to Chivenor to catch some flatties in the Tawe. The rain held off on Tuesday which I felt would help as I didn't want too much fresh water in the estuary when I fished on Wednesday so I was disappointed to wake up to steady rain on Wednesday. Anyway, it dried up a bit and I went to Ilfracombe to get my bait only to find they had no worm due to supply problems caused by the hot summer (they should try the same supplier as my local tackle shop as no problems here). As they didn't have any fresh or frozen crab either I had to give up on the idea of the flounder and settled for trying my luck for pollack, mackeral and a possible bass off Ilfracombe harbour. After about an hour I had had one bite but came to the conclusion that the strong wind was not ideal when I was only kitted out with carp rods and 2oz weights so I decided to head off to my sister's house and try my second intended mark, Exmouth docks. Got to Exmouth in torrential rain and sat in the car for a few minutes waiting for it to die down enough that I could sprint to the tackle shop without drowning in an attempt to get some rag worm for the wrasse and pollack. The lady was very helpful but unfortunately had just given away all her left oevr scraps of ragworm to the local fishing club for their evening competition (see, it's all your fault Dave!!!). I bought some lug instead and went down to the docks only to find a very looking sea and a strong tide running. I knew it was pointless but decided to persevere but gave up after half an hour as my weight was floating on the surface as it wasn't heavy enough to get down in the current and wind.Oh, well another day maybe but I don't very often get such an opportunity to fish. Hopefully on the river bank this weekend for the first time in 20 years after barbel, chub and anything else I can find and at least the weather looks promising! |

| Re: Best Laid Plans Bad luck Pross. The club had a match on Wednesday night for flounder in the Exe, but noone actually caught anything! Come to think of it, only 6 members fished, so they must have taken a bucket full of rag each! Next time you're down this way give us a shout mate. | Re: Best Laid Plans I set out to go piking a few weeks back but my time was limited and the spot I was going to try on the canal was covered in algae so I settled for chasing perch on a different stretch of the canal. Barbel this weekend and I feel confident lol. |
