| Hi Guys, We had another club match yesterday out of Beer. What a day. Blue skies, calm seas, great company and plenty of fish caught. The mackerel were hard to find but after about half an hour we found a shoal that provided some fresh bait for the day. My baits were frozen squid, rag worm, frozen sandeel and some fresh peeler crabs, plus of course the fresh Mackie. Only one rod used …. my trusty 12-20 Abu Suveran coupled with an Abu 7000 and braid. Terminal tackle down tide rig on boom with a flying collar, and a little something else to give me the edge. First drop down and you guessed it a dogfish but first blood to me, second drop down another doggie. Third drop down a nice Poor Cod of 9 inches ![]() that counted for club points, plus forum points. No Pouting thank god….. We fished this mark for a couple of hours….no Black Bream showed here. So we moved off further out by about ½ a mile. One of my club colleagues managed a superb Conger of 27lb on a size 2/0 hook and 30lb snood! Well done Arfur! We had a couple of Bull Huss come to the boat…but none to me this week. As we picked up a bit of tide I baited up with my Black Bream rig and baits plus a little trick I had saved up to try. BINGO!! A typical thumpy rattling Bream bite and game on! AS I brought the fish to the side of the boat I could see in the clear Lyme Bay water that I had not one but Two Black Bream on!! Bloody Hell…..the skipper reached for the net and I stepped back a pace for him to net the first fish…..and then……disaster the second fish that was only just nicked in the side of the mouth came off. Bugger!! The skipper estimated it to be 2-2½lbs. ![]() But hey that’s fishing. 15 points for a Black Bream in my club match. And 1.5 points for the forum species hunt. No more Black Bream came to the boat at that mark, but one more came aboard at another mark later on. I followed My Black Bream with a nice reef Pollock of about 5lbs and a few more doggies and some nice Wrasse, followed by some Mackie bashing for my BBQ today. What I did here from the skipper is that one of his best Wrasse and Pollock marks had been devastated by two Scolloper boats out of Brixham. We saw them on the horizon later on in the day on their way back to Brixham….the skipper was upset to say the least…when will they learn eh?The damage Scallop boats do is horrendous they wipe out everything on the sea floor and reefs. The brittle stars are wiped out and it won’t be long before the Black Bream disappear as they feed on the brittle stars around the reefs. It makes my bloody blood boil!!! All in all a great day out with a fine bunch of lads…which is what it’s all about but how long will it last with all this trawling and dredging that’s going on?? |
