The Lyme Regis pic is definitely a pout, the picture put up later is a poor cod. Look at the pelvic (gill) fin. On a poor cod, the fin reaches a line level with the anal vent. On the pout, it pretty well starts at that line and the fin reaches way past. The body of the pout is much deeper than the head, the poor cod head is almost same profile as the body and the eyes are much larger in relation to the body than those of the pout. Plus the pout in the first pic looks to be 12oz plus. That'd be a pretty big poor cod. Usually pout have barred sides which poor cod do not, but a lack of bars is common in pout, as that pic demonstrates and we often see in open ground fish in winter.

Hope that helps.

Steve

Re: Lyme Regis report

Well that has cleared a lot up with regards to the pout and the poor cod, i can see the difference now between them, even though i cant see the difference between the carp you darkside catch!!!

The pout in the first picture weighed 2lbs 8oz (slightly bigger than 12oz), and the cuckoo wrasse was about 1lb.

To be lying 8th, you must be in the elite of the world!!!!

Are your competitions based around specimen ratings or bag totals?
Species of fish plus weight, i.e. if above qualifying size 45 points for a Black Bream....1.5 points for a Dawgy, 35 points for a Smoothound etc, then points for % specimen of weight if over qualifying species weight.

So a man can catch 30 doggies in a day, but be beaten by 1 Bream inside qualifying size.

Cuckoo Wrasse 15 points, Pout 1.5 points etc

Confused ....so am I most of the time, so I just bag em and tag em and let someone else do the work

So I'm targeting Bream and Cuckoo Wrasse, Pollock and Tope through the day. Change rigs baits rods etc to suit where we are fishing. If a Conger hole then a whole Mackeral Flapper to cover Tope and Conger at the same time

One trick I use for the Bream is to put a large swimfeeder between the lead and the start of the trace and fill it with all sorts of bits and bobs to draw fish to my baits, and bounce it back away from the boat.
