Bass at Teignmouth Hi guys, Just returned from an afternoons fishing off the point at Teignmouth. I have now increased my bass tally for my fishing career to 3!!!!! Using my Daiwa Lochmor Z spinning rod, a small multiplier loaded with braid, I started using a small ball weight followed by a 5' trace of Vanish. Bait was live sandeel bought from the hut on the back beach (Luke wasn't there.) hooked on to a 1/0 Bass hook. £4 a scoop but well worth it in my opinion, for about 35 average size eels. Started fishing at low water around 1pm, and straight away found that weed was a real problem. Decided to discard the ball weight and just freeline the sandeel, although getting it into the main channel was a problem due to a strong wind. Half hour into the session, and I start to get a knock knock on my line, followed by an almighty thump (For those who haven't used braid for this type of fishing, try it, you'll never go back). I struck, and fish on! Reeled in and found a small school bass, cleanly hooked through the bottom lip. Released him immediately, and rebaited and cast out only to get hit a second time in the same place. Another fish of a similar size, which was also cleanly hooked. Those specialist bass hooks were a little more expensive but seemed to do the job, and helped keep the eel on. Now, you're probably wondering where are the pictures and what size were they. Well, if I had weighed the pair together they may have tipped the 1lb mark. Stop laughing, to me this was a HUGE success, and I spent the next 6 hours without a touch, but enjoyable all the same as I now knew that I COULD catch a bass at that location. What was even better, was that they were the only two fish caught by anyone. I packed up my gear and strutted away, head held high like a dog with two C@*ks!!! I hope fishing gives you the immense feeling of wellbeing that it gives me. Great stuff. Darren

Re: Bass at Teignmouth well done darren i have heard the seaward side of the spit is the place to fish at low water (maybe luke can confirm this) and fish into the river at high water i cant drive or i would fish the teign alot more than i do but from that report maybe a train journey is needed for weds or friday weather permitting __________________ fishing for fish is not as simple as you may think!

Re: Bass at Teignmouth i wouldnt really suggest fishing seaward as there is so much weed around there at the moment. If you do want to fish low water, head for the salty, try up and down the bank until you find the fish. There are loads being caught up there at the moment with reports of lots of big fish being caught and lost. __________________ Nothing grows faster than a fish from when it bites until it gets away.

Re: Bass at Teignmouth Luke, where is the salty. I had some sandeel left yesterday and had a drive through Ringmore to Newton Abbot to see if there were any places to stop and fish. No joy so I ended up freezing them. Darren

Re: Bass at Teignmouth Cheers Luke. I have looked at fishing that before, and considered buying waders, as I should think you can fish that all tide, as long as it's not a big one. I suppose the main reason for decent chance of a fish is that they are all channelled into a small area when the tide is out. A bloke was fishing off the birdge in the same spot, but I can't see the fun in that. The position is 30 feet above the water, and the traffic right next to you can't be contributory to an enjoyable days fishing. Might see you down there, Cheers, Darren

Re: Bass at Teignmouth i wouldnt suggest standing out there in waders when the tide comes in! but i have seen them fishing it at low water... is it a wellys/waders job or is it fairly hard sand that i wont get too mucky in? also luke what time of the day do they stop selling the eels? im thinking of coming over on a train one evening but obviously i dont want to get there too late and be stuck with no live eels! __________________ fishing for fish is not as simple as you may think!
