Bristol Channel - Sunday

Hi Guy's,

To try and make up for the disappointment of not going to Alderney I had an invitation to fish in my pals Sea Hog.

Went out into the Bristle Channel for a few hours….actually 12! The weather was good a little misty at first, couple of showers, then partly cloudy until the afternoon. We met up at 7.00am launched at Beachley and out fishing by 8.00am. The sea was flat calm ideal planing conditions so at full bore and with the engine tilted at optimum...away we went.

We fished our low water mark first with some slow results.

My pal and I caught a few fish, including some nice Cod to about 5.5lbs. Nice to see they are still about. But we moved at 1.5 hours to high water to our Bass mark on the sand banks and I caught my first Bass of the year on whole squid to my Abu Conolon uptide rod. We were fishing in 3 metres of water…..along the edge of the sand bank.
I could not use my 12lb class gear as the tide race is just too strong, so had no choice but to fish 8oz uptide grip leads top hold bottom.

A few more fish followed, then surprise surprise a Whiting! Not just one but several….what is this all about then, they are not supposed to still be here!

My pal caught a strap conger on Garfish chunks, then we both caught some lovely Thornback Rays to Rag and Squid cocktails and whole squid.

Here's the piccies of my Bass and a Thornback Ray.

We had a great days fishing, lots of talk ...about fishing of course, but lts of banter as well.

Here's to the next time.....maybe for Sole or even my favourite......Smoothound

The Bass and Thornies all went back, but 2 of the Cod are in my freezer

Wow, sounds like plenty of species around. Hopefully they'll be catchable from the shore soon, about time I went back to Goldcliffe I think. Who needs Alderney?

Wink Re: Bristol Channel - Sunday

Nice one Shaun

I fished at Aust Thursday evening and caught two codling - one on rag and the other on lug. Both went back as not that large but still good fun.

Hoping to fish off the sandbanks this weekend depending on tide and or maybe our usual mark hoping for bass.

After this summer we are planning to use our boat next winter in the channel so hopefully we will have a few good days out but a lot of homework will have to be done fishing such a dangerous area first.

Maybe you can offer me some advice on anchoring etc. in the channel when we eventually meet up and nearer to christmas ?

Well done anyway mate.

Tommy
