Thumbs down disasterous night at burnham on mud

last night the 3 amigos were packed into baggies car and heading north to the channel , with good expectaions over a neap low

we were undecided wether to stand on rocks at minehead or the "sand" at burnham

with the taunton turnoff closed burnham it was,, and hopes were still hight

get too mark and thats when shane realises his hat and headlamp were ontop of the car as we headed off ( so were now on road somewhere

headed off to shanes fave end, down by the yacht club

wind was over our backs but straight out the mud was horrible and deep so we headed left as far as could till we werent 50 yrds away from water to start

I was first with a bait in the water, with a big old squid on a 3/0 pennel. started on 2nd rod and bugger first rods not holding in current, start to retrieve. wow theres a fish which surfaced and looked 1/2 decent, then came off as lead stuck in next mudbank grrr

but hopes were high now

so the three of us slopped arround in mud( well to be honest i went for big casts from top of bank , with thoughts of how the hell do i get a fish back if get a bite)

then disaster for shane as his rod broke when pulling for lead to come out mud, century ccc and broke where reducer goes in rod
and too make worse he lost rig in end too )

then after lots of gaffertape and resetting goes to retrieve 2nd rod ( again century ccc) and snap, similar break similar place ),, this was bad
now baggie was onto loseing 3rd set of gear in mud ( this stuff just sucks the gear in and dont let go)

rich may have had a fish, as was getting tiny rattles and we heard something surface in the dark, then again snagged and lost in mud grr

we gave up way too late at just before midnight not a good night at all

the terible toll was

rich 4 sets gear and leads no fish

me 1 set gear and 1/2 decent fish lost

shane 2 broken rods, 3 or 4 sets gear , headtorch and hat no fish

what a mare, and all stuffs caked in mud as well ( my next job now)
its going to be difficult to rich out again soon i think, mojo's def deserting my mates fast

myself i still got 2 doz lug need drowning but think tonight i'll find a pint instead of the mud and hope for mon/tues eve( it can only improve)

dave

Sounds like a nightmare, never good to leave the reducer in when putting a strain on the rod, expensive lesson learn there .

Expensive night mate. Must be some kind of fault with those Century rods if they break like that.

Wow... what a trip. Shane must decapitated a few black cats with broken mirrors before he left, unless he hasn't given the wurzell god his dregs of zider yet.

Re: disasterous night at burnham on mud

sounds like a tough night pingu.
most people tend to fish the sailing club end 2 up and 2 down on the bigger tides.
on the neaps try by the lower light (lighthouse on beach) from low water up.
fished it saturday and had a few whiting and a couple of flounders. did witness a few codling to 3lb and eels to just under 10.
hope that helps.
