Exclamation Whats is Uptiding

Hi All again

I have read an article, below

http://www.worldseafishing.com/forum...d.php?t=252382

It is about uptiding. What is uptide and what is downtide? It is one of those word/s that could have two meanings!

Any help would be great.

regards

Nigel2011

The guy on the link was trying to explain it. It seems that you walk towards the incoming tide and cast toward it, then walk back to tripod and let the slack out as you do. walk towards to incoming tide I think means that if the tide is running left to right, you walk left and cast left.

Still not sure and need a easy explanation. Imagine I am blonde, perhaps that might not be a good idea, lol.

Re: Whats is Uptiding

just read that thread thats how i fish in cardigan bay where the flow is left to right along the beach on a flood ,i dont think it is up tiding as from a boat but im sure some one will put u right i cast left let the lead get caught in current with slack line so it ends up virtualy infront of me and so lead grips where i want it sounds same to me

Re: Whats is Uptiding

The whole point of uptiding is to use the tide to pin your weight to the sea bed by putting a bow in your line.
You cast into(upwards) the tide and allow excess line to come off your reel, the water pressure (tide) puts a bow in the line pressing it down to put extra pressure on the weight to help hold it to the seabed.

Re: Whats is Uptiding

downtideing- fishing off a boat at anchor and letting the lead fish straight down or swept behind depending on how strong the tide is.

uptideing-

term coined originally i believe by boat anglers , fishing shallow areas wher the disturbance of a boat at anchor noticably put off fish down tide developed in the thames estuary i think, and involves casting away to the side of a boat or forward, ie up tide, grip leads are required to hold the baits in position out of the scare zone of the anchored boat.

at one point an angler on a charter i was with insisted on trying to uptide from a drifting boat and wondered why he could never hook the fish when he 'had a bite ' and his griplead pulled out .

what you are descibeing i 've also heard being refered to as uptideing basically from a beach with strong lateral tides if you cast straight out the tide will sweep your rigs down the beach before the lead grips the sea bed, this makes it easy for tide/weed to pull out the gripleads.
if before casting you walk along the beach uptide and cast the rig will settle infront or uptide of you when you return to your rests.
if you release a bow of line the rig will sit on the bottom with the leader and mainline streaming down tide before turning towards you on the beach this helps the grips stay locked in the sea bed.

when fishing like this bites register as a knock and /or slackline wind down till you feel the weight of the fish and strike firm but slow cos the fish is prob already hooked.

Re: Whats is Uptiding

yep thats how i fish borth it pulls from left to right if you cast in front of you as i have seen done the lead ends up in shallow water way over to the right of you so i walk to the left let the lead fly and slack line back to podby time i tighten down lead griped right infront of me and as you say less line diagonal to beach to pick up weed

Re: Whats is Uptiding

theother problem with line diagonal to the beach isw that there is more drag against it from breaking waves and that pops your grip lead out too
