Hi there,

I dont know the area but my advice is to get yourself a few dexter wedges. They are cheap, easy to cast and will attached most fish. Real them in fast over snaggy ground.

Sam.

Re: could anyone give me a little bit of advice please?

I've fished Mother Ivey's loads, had many a nice holiday down there, lovely beach and top fishing.

If you want mackerel or bass from the rocks to the right of mother ivey, then your best best is to float fish sandeel (set for a depth of about 20 ft) one hour either side of high tide. plop the flop about 15 foot out from the rocks and let it work its way back out from the rock. you'll be catching plenty of decent size mackerel doing this. also resist the urge to stick on the feathers and float fish as light as possible the mackerel fight like wounded badgers and are good fun on the light gear.

If you can cast about 80 yards or more, then about two hours either side of high tide you want to be fishing from the old quarry which is about 400 yards to the right of the beach at mother ivey, this time use a running ledger with a two foot trace, 3/0 hooks and again sandeel - use a 4oz weight, don't use a gripper, let your weight move with the tide and you'll have a good chance of a decent small eyed ray, i've had them up to about 6lb (ish) from here.

Finally if you want to go for some of the small turbot that show up on the beach then again i'd use a running ledger, 3oz weight no grippers, and a size 1 or 2 hook, with either lugworm or ragworm, tipped off with something fishy. Myself i wouldn't bother off the beach at Mother Ivey, I'd fish the rocks and target the better sized Mackeral and the Rays.

Also worth popping into Padstow Angling on the quay to check what's doing where but make sure you get them to give you really clear directions as to when to fish and where, north cornwall can be a tricky place to get right sometimes.

If you get really adventurous and its dry, then give Trevose Head a go, again float fishing nice and deep, you never know what you'll catch up there, but be careful it is a dangerous mark.
