Going for a Bass

With these big SW winds myself and Chesil Chucker thought we might be able to tempt a Bass out with some plug fishing around Portland Bill. Just in case the Bass were not playing we had brought some worms to target some mini species.

We tried for about an hour and a half with every plug in our arsenal, all to no avail. The wind made it rather uncomfortable and with the water level dropping and uncovering the rocks at low water we decided to find somewhere a bit more sheltered.

We had a look at numerous sheltered marks but all lacked enough water for our target species. We opted to fish Ferrybridge in the end but with little confidence of any species.

We were fishing pretty light just using spinning rods and small ball weights, size 6 hooks and worm. I was hoping to find some Gobbies or Blennies.
After a couple of minutes into my first cast my rod tip banged round and I quickly struck into the fish. Roger commented that it certainly wasn't any mini species. A spirited fight brought the first of 2 early but small Black Bream.

This was followed by our first Schooly Bass of the year as well.

We got our target species but not as we expected.

Don't worry Andy, I suffer from same ingorance disease as well. 20 years holiday from sea fishing so all pretty new to me too. I thought a sole was a flounder last week.
