| holiday fishing report. Part one. Well as promised I am making my report on the highs and lows of the fishing on my holiday in Devon and Cornwall. The weather was better than average for the whole fortnight and the tides were fishable where ever I went, OH JOY I started out staying near Exeter and after a day of doing very little I managed a short trip to Dawlish, Sat 1 Aug, I fished 2 hours up and 1 down from the beach. There were a lot of feather flinging going on and I swear lives were in danger. Those in the know and those in fear of permanent injury moved further away from the left side of the beach and down towards the river mouth. There were some mackerel caught and I was told a bass had been caught the day before. I blanked but to be fair I only had a few bits of kit in the car and had a go whilst the good lady sat with a puzzle book and hot chocolate on the beach. The next day could not have been different, showers and sunny spells, for a day in Teignmouth. Not a place I have visited before so I had a good wander round. I eventually found the harbour/marina and saw 2 or 3 anglers free lining sand-eel around the boats, with mixed success. I asked a few questions and was directed to a bloke selling live sand-eel £5 a scoop, plenty for a decent session and good quality. I gave it a go and landing 1 small bass and some mackerel. Not a bad session although 1 guy landed a good number of keepers. I could see this was worth a bit more planning and another shot later in the holiday. We then moved down to Marazion, near Penzance, and did very little on the first day other than top up the supplies and have a wander around Penzance around dusk. I spotted a charter boat cleaning of their decks after a days fishing and asked about the local fishing. The shores were a bit quiet and what fish there were were small. The skipper told me they were catching rays, cod and haddock on the 8 hours trips. So as I was my birthday whilst we were away I took the chance to negotiate with my lovely wife and arranged a trip for Thurs 5 Aug in the afternoon/evening. This done it was back to the caravan for food, wine and Scrabble. As we were so close to St. Michael’s Mount we decided to go and have a look. The tide was out and I couldn't help but notice the worm casts on the beach. Once the sight-seeing was done I fetched the trusty fork from the boot of the car along with my bait tubs, put on the waders and got to digging. In 30 minutes I had enough lug and rag for a decent night session on Penzance break water. The charter boat skipper was right about the size of the fish being quite small but there were plenty of them and it made for a fun session. Finished fishing around mid-night, told the misses I would be back for 10, so I was expecting the cold shoulder . Walk out of the pub into a down pore and escaped into a little bits and pieces shop. Came out 2 minutes later and the sun was so strong there was steam rising from the tarmac. You have got to love the Cornish weather. The guy in the tackle shop in Porthleven is very helpful and I saw him ring round other tackle shops to help out a chap who couldn't find the gear he was looking for. Top man.I am going to leave it there for now as I must do something that looks like work. I will continue my tale when time allows. thank you for reading, back soon __________________ Ddaz.
