First Conger Hunt of the Season

A phone call last night confirmed it. The first conger hunt of the 2010 season was on out of paignton on Tuonela.

The weather was perfect, the sea was very slight and the boat looking shiny and new again after her winter refit.

We set off at 9am as usual and drifted at Berry Head to see if we could catch a few mackeral. Nothing doing, still too early.

On a mark about 12 miles out the local trawlermen call "The Albion" down went the anchor with about 2 hours to go before slack water. I was running late this morning so I had forgotten the sandwiches I made last night. I did however, remember a load of bait I've been saving in the freezer.

There were 11 anglers on the boat and pretty soon we were all pulling up the obligatory Pout and silver whiting.

Then, a bit of a surprise when we all hooked into a shoal of herring. They were coming up thick and fast. Many of them went straight back down again though..as bait!

No one got any conger today, but my tally on saltwater species added herring to the pout, whiting and Pollock.

I took photos on my Blackberry, and as soon as I can work out how to get them from there to the PC, or even how to find them on the damned device I'll post them!

Fantastic day out as usual on Tuonela. Don't forget, if you want a day out on this boat, I have one booked for the end of this month. I forget the date at this precise moment, but one of my earlier posts has the details.

I'm tired and sunburned now, so I'm off for a pint

Thanks for reminding me Dave. I think we need a recount. Pout with pic and claim a herring. Add these to the rainbow, whiting and pollock with pics already posted That's 7 for me plus speci hunter's fish ;0)
