| weekend in looe well we got down polperro near looe in one piece last friday nite and it was a early start next day for our planned wrecking trip as its very tidal in the harbour and we had to be away b4 6 am. the morning was top draw with the sun coming up in to a clear blue sky for a very welcome change. after a hour of steaming we stopped for a bit of mackerel but it was not to be. another hours steam and we hit the first wreck. not a very big wreck but it was a very productive spot with a very good average stamp of fish of which murry the skipper showed us how it was done with a 16lb and a 17lb in 2 drifts . i started by trying to use my spinning rod but after the 2nd drift i worked out i was wasting my time and had missed out on some very good fish.(note to self:- dont be a Cock with a spinning rod at the start of a trip) on the next drift i changed to the a real rod and instantly hit in to a 15lb pollock. as the tide eased the fish got smaller and i had a few more around the 4-5 lb mark and a nice whiting of well over 3lb. next came the poxy pout hitting shads bigger than the pout, so it was time for a move. the next wreck was a lot bigger, massive in fact. and with the sounder showing "coddy" markings i tryed the hopper rig like we use for the cod in the summer and bang i was in straight away , thinking i got my self a nice cod, up came a nice 12lb ling...result on the next drift i done it again and it worked again, with me dropping 2 then getting a smaller fish of about 5lb , which managed to go back. in the end i had 4 ling by hopping. as the tide picked up i went back to shading for the pollock and had a couple more small ones, a couple of crazy cuckoo wrasse and some poxy pout. the rest of the day was a bit of a come down as it was like switch had been flicked in to off and we struggled to get any more fish and by 3pm we started to head home filleting away. to a point i nearly forgot to get a piccy , but hear are the un butchered ones and 1 of the wrasse ![]() ![]() and hears murrys monsters ![]() the next day i was crewing for a 8 hirer rods(beats seeing the inlaws...lol) this day was on the reefs and was a much slower day from the start, with no mackerel and relying on frozen squid heads and a few mackerel. we found a reef that started to produce and the ling started coming in but only to the mackerel and by dinner time we were down to cuting the heads in half to get a couple more baits out of them and the ling did not mind. as we ran out of mackerel we had a hard go at getting some frsh ones and after a hour we had a few and also this mad thing hit my lead weight ![]() by 3.30 pm the punters had about 20-25 ling all in the 4-8lb range. every one was happy and we head home. top weekend and realy has inspired me to get back in to the fishing after this long slow period which just kills the mojo off. next trip to cornwall in may with it been a wrecking ling trip in search of the bigguns. __________________ http://i116.photobucket.com/albums/o...xt80382370.gif |
