brean down beach 20/3/10

last night the club had a comp on at my fave venue..charmouth, but there had been a steadily southerly all day , with a biggish tide it was going to be unpleasent, and also we would have to miss first 2 hours due to family stuff so where to go???( heard since that only 3 or 4 rockling caught all comp)

Had heard on the net that B D B had been fishing well for tiny coddling so was decided as we had worm baits and would be good to get a cod under the belt ( as struggled last 2 years) got to be worth a pop

so after baggie picking me up at 7.15 and a small detour at exeter and then driving through steady rain all the way up m5 we were on the beach by 8.30 with 1 hour of the flood to go. in calm conditions and just a hint of rain( stayed that way all eve)

we were fishing from the carpark slipway where those cars are parked on beach

i was useing worm and a 2/0 pompey rig on one rod doe a cod and other rod a double squid and 4/0 pennel in vague hope of early ray, rich was much the same but the worm rig was a size 1

Richs' first retieve brought in this fine specimin for points


then i had one the same size myself

rich then managed 2 more whereas i was getting knocks but not connecting

the tide then turned and started its rapid retreat down the beach in 20 minutes it was 85 paces away and my squid bait was on the beach

so we went for a move and reckie down to our right under the cliff

with the tide still hammering out = cast 1 rod and walk 5 paces back set up then walk 10 back to the shore and cast other back and reset up by which time its another 5 paces out

decided enough was enough at just before midnight, and found best value kebab shop known in burnham( where we also realised just how sheltered from the northerly we were by that big lump of rock called brean down


a cracking night, fish, shelter and kebab

think we may return but more on the flood than ebb

What Dave said basically. We turned up and the first hour saw 3 codling in the first 5 casts, before the tide turned and we spent the next 2 hours chasing the Bristol Channel down the beach. Damn, it doesn't hang around does it? A nice change, and some points so a good night all in all.

Nice one guys but next time you want to fish the ebb at that venue best put your running shoes on lol.

Where abouts did you park? Parking can be a bit of an issue along that road at the best of times!
