| Almost forgot to claim some points Well, I almost forget to claim some points for a fish I caught back in September. So here it goes, a quick report: Back in September I met up with a friend of mine Nigel to fish Christchurch harbour for some mullet, in a total different way I was use to sea fish. Christchurch harbour is a breakish water, there was even a chance of some nice freshwater fish like roach or bream besides our target fish. THE MULLET!!! I met up with Nige around 8am at the tackle shop in Ringwood to get the tickets. About 20 mins later we arrived at our destination The harbour, a stunning place for fishing ![]() ![]() This time I would learn to fish for mullet in a slightly different way I'm use too...that meant putting the chest waders on and stand in 4 Ft deep water, trotting with a centrepin on 4lb mainline and 2lb hook length. Bread flakes as hook bait and bread mash balls as feed. It was a clear sunny day and the water was crystal clear, not the ideal situation for fishing but we could see plenty of small mullet topping, so we were in hope to catch. Well, as you all know mullet fishing can be very fustrating, specially when you know they are there, sucking on your bait but you can't connect. I wasn't used to that deep wading neither and was starting to get a bit cold but stubborn as I am, I didn't give up (well, not for a while anyway ). About 30-40 mins into our fishing Nigel hooked into a nice fish, I think it was a thick lip mullet of about 2-2.5lb.This gave me hope, so I kept feeding little balls of breadmash under my rod tip, continuing trotting the float. The float kept driffting into the distance and I was just about to reel in as I felt a sharp pull and the float dissepeared under the waves. So I struck and started to reel in keeping the tension in the line and after a couple of minutes I landed my first (and only) mullet on the centrepin of around the 3lb mark ![]() I never know the what's a thick lip or thin lip one but hey hoooo it's a mullet. The tide was getting low so we decided to wade back to shore and put a ledger out for anything that might be interested in our bait. Nigel chilling ![]() Nothing elses was caught that day, although Nigel hooked another mullet but lost it. Nevertheless I had a great time and was chuffed to have caught a saltwater fish on freshwater tactics....great fun ![]() __________________ There is certainly something in angling that tends to produce a serenity of the mind." - Washington Irving |
