Ilfracombe six species !!!

Spent some well earned time off fishing and surfing with my brother. We had a ray, dogfish, a large rockling and a pollack tuesday night off the pier. Then had a 3 lb strap conger, 2 1/2 lb bass, another rockling, and stacks off small pollack and loads of other missed bites all from a secretish rock mark near combe on thursday. The pollack and the bass were all taken on a tiny little float just put out for a bit of fun with a little strip of mackeral. Ive fished the combe pier for years and never seen a ray landed so that was a result and my brother scored a personal best with his bass. All the fish were taken on mackeral baits have tried everything else round here but all ways seem to do best on mackeral, just shows that you dont all ways need to spend a fortune on crab and worm baits. Been grinning ever since.

Thumbs up Re: Ilfracombe six species !!!

Top sport Guys. I've fond memories of catching my first Mackerel at Ilfracombe when I was a kid. Very underated bait. I guess it's because Frozen mackie is so hard to keep on the hook...

Re: Ilfracombe six species !!!

Had my first mackeral off the old pier too. Top fishin spot on its day and seems

to be improvin again after the trashing it got when they demolished the old

pier. Just waiting for the whiting to arrive so i can stock the freezer. Have seen

everything possible caught from the pier including an octopus and a member of

the sub aqua club ! ! Great place to learn and take kids and underated as a

serious venue.

Re: Ilfracombe six species !!!

Greenheart if you let frozen mackerel thaw abit mate and not when half frozen, and whip with a bit off bait elastic or not if fishing in close, its in my eyes the best bait on its own or when tipping. Top frozen bait thawed out can out fish fresh. Sandeel is another bait, but only let it half thaw, deadly bait with rag catch any fish that swims.
