Anyone know when the next spring tide is due for the bristol channel??

I'm after any information about spring tides on the bristol channel, looking to go to portishead for some cod but have no idea where to get info for spring tides???

If anyone knows when they happen or where to find info please let me know.

Thanks

COD are a winter species ........and springs are not the best tides to fish the Bristol channel......especially the upper reaches

Re: Anyone know when the next spring tide is due for the bristol channel??

Hi Pedro.

On the home page of this great site there is a moon phase indicator (thank you administrator, I am guessing Richard, but I might be wrong). This gives an indication as to when we are likely to get spring tides. They occur around the new moon and the full moon. The larger of the springs being on the full moon. This occurs at the same time all over the world.

However due to the magnetic forces being concentrated in certain areas of the world there is an effect called the Lunar wave (it is also known by other names) but basically the tide starts in that area and radiates from there. It takes around 3 days to reach us here in the UK. That is why our strongest tides do not occur on the full or new moon but a few days after.

I hope that this explanation is not too in depth. Spring tides are good for many species, but as Charter Skipper says they are not always the best for all areas. I can give an example that you can rarely catch Mackerel in Chesil Cove on a spring tide. Why? I have no idea, all I know is from experiance.
