unlucky or what

Woke up on Sunday to find it was a lovely sunny day. went down stairs and dad was already packing to go to the beach so I packed my little 9ft spinning rod, a Dexter wedge and some Markel lines. The plan was to spend the day lying on a beach then on the way back stop off at Slapton to try and catch some Markel. so that’s what we did got to slapton for about 4pm didn’t look like any one was catching anything so after 2 hours of nothing decided to pack up. Walking along the beach dad was joking saying what are we going to do if people start reeling them in now. And oh yes guess what happened a man got a line full of makys so I said to dad we can’t leave now its just starting to get good so he ran to the car put another hour on. I started to realise every one but me was reeling them in started to get a bit pissed off after half hour of every one around me catching 4 at a time every cast. From what I could see is every one was casting about 10 meters farther out than me. So there was me with a 9ft rod and 2oz weight and every one ells with 12ft and about 4oz weights. I must have been about 5 meters off the shawl but it was impossible to get that extra distance . So left the beach empty handed with every one ells around me with at least 10 each. All I can say is I’m planning a session on Wednesday and it better be good!

Re: unlucky or what

I've been using a 4 oz weight with my spinning and getting good distance, perhaps up to 80 yards I think. (A satisfying length of about 6 seconds or more from cast to splash). Some of the mackerel were taking on the drop from that cast before I've even begun retrieving, so clearly getting that distance was key at that time. (Budleigh seafront)

Unlucky Tom. Keep the faith with the lighter gear, they go really weel when you give them a chance. I fish for them with a 30gr spinning rod and a dexters. Great fun.
