Sand Point (what was the point!) Fished the above mark today in search of an early ray, sand eel, launce, squid and macky plus black lug. Not a touch. Fished 2 before low and 3 back up. A guy about 100 yards to my right fared no better in his search for a cod, but I guess just like me he'll be back out there at the earliest opportunity! I really must get down to devon, soooooooooooon!

Re: Sand Point (what was the point!) Unlucky Nick. Can i ask what the difference in tactics is between ray & cod fishing please? Do you use longer traces for the rays? __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:>

Re: Sand Point (what was the point!) Hi spahill, I use longer traces for ray, whether its pulley or fixed paternoster that I'm using for one reason; I think that because of the way in which a ray "flops" down on the bait if there is not a great enough seperation between the bait and the lead the ray is likely to feel the wires from a grip lead sticking in to it. That may sound daft at first consideration but I know how I would react if I felt that sort of sudden discomfort, i'd be out of there pronto! I also tend to use smaller hooks generaly and different bait, but that applies to where I fish. I met a guy recently who puts on very big baits (15 lug on a pennel) and then casts out and walks back up the beach as the tide advances and at times there is 200 yards of line between him and his rig. He reckons that although he is targeting cod he frequently gets pick ups from the ray. I'll be giving that a try soon!

Re: Sand Point (what was the point!) I made up some looong traces (4ft each 2 hook clipped down) last year for ray. felt a bit of a wally when I accidently clipped one on my 12 foot rod & went to cast , they just about went out on the 15 footers.Didn't catch 1, didn't catch much on them, apart from doggies. Probably in the wrong place at the wrong time, will target them a bit harder this year, with slightly shorter traces or just 1 hook. __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:>
