Bristol Channel - Clevedon

Just returned back to Sea Angling following a fairly long break. Three winter trips under my belt so far and no blanks to report.....yet!

Nothing earth shattering but a steady flow of whiting falling to Squid an Rag packages on a pulley pennel rig. Have been fishing on the flat outcrops of rock up past Ladye Bay.

Fishing size 3/0's with three or four decent rag fed up the line using a bait needle with about half a squid body (when opened out) whipped into place over the last rag. Squash the top 2 or 3 rags down so all the juices are compact and fix everything in place with the top hook. Im using 8oz Gemini breakout lead to hold everything on bottom...

Would welcome any comments on using different rigs...baits...tactics and anything else producing numbers of fish?

Also....If anyone has fished this mark what sort of distances have you found the fish?

Cheers,

Apple...

Re: Bristol Channel - Clevedon

Welcome Appleman.
Sorry haven't fished Ladye Bay this year.
Didn't get the hang of it, the year before either.
Fluked a strap on 1st visit then got progressivly worse.
Might go back if the wind ever turns southerly again & the tides are right.
Sounds like you are doing the right sort of thing though.
Good luck.

Re: Bristol Channel - Clevedon

Weekends Activities....Flat rocks up the coast from Ladye Bay

Fished 3hrs up and 1hr down yesterday and fished it hard for the duration...Baited rig ready to go for a quick switch when the wet rig comes in giving me the max time in the water.

Peeler and rag or rag and squid on a 3/0 pulley penell...Sad to say I didnt even have a touch..not even a sniff. Only fish heard of across circa 10 rods was two tiny whiting.

Various people wandering up and down the coast stopping for a chin wag and all telling me the fishing is terrible....The UK Fishing community is apparently camped out at Chesil for December and probably into January.

Re: Bristol Channel - Clevedon

Unlucky Appleman, cerainly sounds hard going in the channel at the moment.

Mind you, it was fairly hard going at Chesil last nigh. Three of us a Abbotsbury balnked in style. Some friends down at Cogden had aa few doggies and channels but apart from that, dire.

Re: Bristol Channel - Clevedon

The reason is not because of your tactics mate but the bloody SPRATS are in and have been for a month now - dont know if and when they dissappear but shouldnt be long and hopefully itll pick up again but until then its a waste of time !!!!

Incidentally the same result for us at Sand Point a week ago - three rods for three hours and only one bite !

Re: Bristol Channel - Clevedon

Same mark....Up from Ladye Bay on the flat..Fished 2 up and 2 down.....Cold doesn't doesn't do it justice it was -2 when I left the car and a blistering 0 when I got back...

Early doors a really good bite that resulted in nothing more than a mangled bait....Two hooks and chomped right between both of them. Next bite was fairly solid with the rod tip bouncing a couple of times....The chap troubling my bait this time was a fat codling of around 1.5lbs to 2lbs tops...My first Cod since coming back off my break and I am well chuffed...

Asking around the Cod are beginnig to show up at Clevedon which is good news...

Rig - Pulley pennell & 8oz gemini
Bait - Rag and squid
