Re: Pentewan Sands area next May. Good luck Simon. Weather forecast looks like it is picking up at last. Still a few days off but possibilities of a ridge of high pressure over the S coast for end of weekend. make a change from the wind & rain.Rest of country may get a good soaking though. __________________ Spahill <:--- --- --- --- It was this big --- --- --- ---:>

Re: Pentewan Sands area next May. We're there from the 23rd for a week too. A blasted flat by the front folding camper with a podgy welsh drunk waving ancient beach gear around. See you maybe. Should be easy to spot , we'll be the ones watching stationery rod tips :) __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk

Re: Pentewan Sands area next May. Well ill be at Pentewan Campsite on Saturday for a week and hope to get at least 2 fishing stints in off the rocks. I will stick to simple running ledgers as advised though may take a few pike floats with me as well. Last time I went to Pentewan I remember fishing in that Harbour with one of the local lads called Vincent. That was a very long time ago! Wish me luck!!

Re: Pentewan Sands area next May. well folks been there come back, CRAP had the beachcaster out on low water with sand eel, lug, the bait came back as it went in NAWT. Spinning and plugging of the rocks all over with a good number of different plugs n spinners NAWT, fished of mevagissy harbour walls (both) not at the end as it was packed with kids n dads flicking massive hooks in with bubble floats on NAWT.Fished low water at charlestown on the rocks with plugs and a rod in on the bottom with peeler on NAAAAAWT, fished the harbour as well into the rough stuff (cast in between the rocks into sand bottom) with sand eel, lug, peeler NAAAAAWT, ended up on the last few days just going for the mackies at charletown where i caught one or two Where are the fish at these points in cornwall, fair enough not catching bass, good sized pollock, ect but there was nothing at all the bait came back as it went in (a local i spoke to was blaming foreign boats scouring the shoreline) simon

Re: Pentewan Sands area next May. Well we're back. Got there on saturday and was kn@ckered. The low tide was at midnight (ish) so decided to do and blow a few cobwebs off . Bait was mackerel and prawns (didn;t have the time or energy to get any "real" bait. Got to the lowtide mark and spotted sandeels in the sand below our feet, hmm! So it was macky on a two hook trace and cast it about 80 yards and out came the carp rod. A 2oz lead with a long flowing trace and a sice 1/0 hook baited with live sandeel. Within about half an hour the macky rod started nodding and it was doggy after doggy , lost count around ten. Baring in mind that me and my fishing partner (ash' , not a big internet user) had caught ONE bass each in the previous pathetic trip to Kernow , well we were really enjoying the action. Then , guess what happened ? The carp rod went thud, then started going over. I struck and my exact words were, "This is the bassiest fu@@ing dogfish I've had all night". It then tore of across the beach causing me to release the anti-reverese and let it take some line. A spirited fight later and sure enough my personal best bass of around 5 lb, on a carp rod and about 30 yards out. Chuffed doesn't even begin to sum it up. I don't beleive in killing everything you catch (the doggies went back) , I also take the odd one for the pot. So with a little tinge of guilt I respectfully dispatched the fish for the BBQ we were having the next day. If we had been catching bass like we were catching doggies then one more might have followed this one tothe fridge but the rest would have gone back. As it was that was it on the bass front and we continued to fill our cruftd entry in. All in all that first night was real fun. We had a few day time bashes (mainly with spinners, plugs and me with a rubber eel), with no takers. One day was quite calm and a huge shoal of mullet appearead. A quick retreat to our nearby camper and a quick line change and it was back to try and catch the worlds most frustrating fish. Had one more low tode night time bash later in the week. Wind had flipped to NE and I was not so confident. I ended up with 5 doggies and was chuffed to have caught after a couple of day time blanks. From what I learnt I reckon Penetewan probably fishes best on a dark night (there was no moon the first night), on a low tide and rising for the first hour or two. It looks like the fish do not come all the way in and with the tide causing you to retreat they seem to hang around near the low tide mark. One thing though. If you are going there this year, go at dead low tide at night and there are sandeel all over the place . Do watch for weevers though. I always gut any fish I kill to have a look what they had been eating and that bass had NOTHING but sandeel in it. For those campers amongst you, this site is a cracker, yards from the sea, good clean facilites and St Austell and Mevagissey very close. Have a great summer. Isle of wight next, mullet from Gurnard if I can. And of , of course , it's only two more weeks before I can see about ruining my appalling barbel record. __________________ Just remember, not all the heroes died. www.helpforheroes.org.uk
