| Or maybethread should be titled just happy as a pig in sh*t BTW get a coffee this is a long one but I just don’t care as still smileing Well as planned trips go I had planned last night almost too much As many know I have been wanting and trying to pop my conger and thornie cherry for a good while, and too this end I have travelled from brixham, to salcombe estuary , lilstock, putsbrough and even climbed breandown .Now the assault was going to be on Burnham on mud, to be exact The Lower Light Hers a stock picture of lighthouse as was too dark when we got there ( odd building though) ![]() I have followed alot of reports for here on several forums and noticed a pattern about the neaptides here and last night was the night During the day things weren’t going quite as planned though The tackle shop had no worm ( well if the conger weren’t playing something else might) then Rich rings that he may have to cut evening short due to work, and I really didn’t fancy a totally new venue on own BUT!!!!!! In end at 5,10pm I got a call from Exmouth tackle shop and he’s got worm ( that’s real service thanks rob you’re a star !!!!!!!!) then Rich’s work has changed and its game on as well ![]() So after a good start by team speckled hen , off from exmouth at 7.30 at 8.30 we are looking at this sign and wondering how true it is ![]() ![]() Luckily I had been seriously warned and was wearing thigh waders( thank god as thing would have lost normal wellies) So we struck out to the lower light and started finding the mud, then turned left slipped and sloshed our way down accross the beach until eventually finding the waters edge Setting up in this liquid slurry was sooo nice ![]() ![]() Well to say the fishing was slow at this point was an understatement and apart from 2 tint whiting on a size 4 rig ( hunting sole/anything as was so quiet), we relented and soon found the mud was good for keeping beer stable and cool though ![]() The tide seemed to turn early and we were being pushed back up quite steadily Rich was getting quite despondant and we were ½ considering calling it quits when he got a shock as he reeled in to rebait and found his conger cherry was popped with this ![]() ![]() So fishing started up again in earnest and 20 minutes later I notice my right hand rod tip bounce up and there was a serious weight on the endA 5 min struggle against the current and bang goes my thornie cherry ![]() Spikey wee devil as well ![]() At 9lb 14oz I was well chuffed ![]() found out today is only 6oz off club record !!! next time lol After returning I threw out the whole rig and bait as seemed hardly touched and 5 mins later the rod goes mental again This time its another good fight and bend in the rod and another cheery popped with this conger ![]() Not bad 2 fish on 1 bait ![]() We did try to weigh him as sure this would have been my first double figure seafish but in the struggle the digiscales ended up in the mud so that idea was stuffed but I was chuffed Then I lost another in what must be the only snag on the beach( an old boat engine that we walked past earlier and I stupidly cast over ) then again the other rod went and another conger for me ![]() You can see the state I got in with the first one now with all that mud The tide was really really pushing hard now and we were both struggling with footings as the mud was getting sloppier and sloppier so we called it a day at 2.15am I’m sure the fishing was really going to kick of but we were both knackered after this draining mud All my 3 ( proper ) fish were on whole squid 3/0 pennel Rich’s was on sandeel Good run home saw us back at 3.30 Got up this morning to sort all the gear out and god it looks bad in the cold light of day ![]() But I don’t care was a top night With 3 cherries popped ![]() I must say a massive thanks both to Rich for sticking with my seeminly stupid plan of wallowing about in the mud ![]() And also to a guy known only to me as Basspopper for some top top info on the area, virtual beers to you both Cheers ![]() dave i think we shall return but not just yet __________________ www.exmouthsaa.co.uk 24 beers in a case and 24 hours in a day simples You won't know unless you go :D...and if you do go!! please let us know :D as thats how the forum thrives Last edited by pingu; 09-25-2008 at 10:16 AM. |

| Re: Popping your cherry bigtime in the mud nice one pingu,as for the mud getting sloppier, thats because when the tide is flooding in the water may be 20ft in front by sight but it will also be seeping through the mud your standing on....hence the sign as in places it will turn to quick sand ,nice fish m8,well done __________________ species 07/codling/whiting/pollack/lsd/pout/ |
