Sand Point 10 August 2008

Morning All,

Well I made my first visit to Sand Point yesterday with Paul. The Point is about 4 miles further up the Bristol Channel than Weston-Super-Mare. Paul suggested travelling light but my only concession was to move most of my tackle into a rucksack rather than my usual seat box. I wish I'd dumped more!
The Car Park is at the foot of the Point and we had to climb 40 or 50 steps to reach the top. Despite my stopping half-way to pretend to admire the view I was puffing and blowing like a goodun by the time I reached the gate at the top. A walk across the point and a scramble down to some rock ledges saw us ready to fish about 11am for a 1.40pm high tide.
This is the view to the left:

This is the view to the right:

I'd read that the Point was a bit of a tackle graveyard and that proved correct. Several gripleads, shockleaders, rigs were snagged never to be seen again but Sod's Law dictated that as soon as I switched to some rotton bottom rigs that I'd made up with some old lead I never lost another thing. Why is it that you only ever lose the expensive kit.
I was surprised by the strength of the tide as even a relatively small tide needed 6 ozs to hold bottom. It was also quite breezy and both our tripods were blown over at least once.
It wasn't all doom and gloom though as my rod hooped over at the top of the tide and with a bit of help from Paul to handline the leader up the last few feet I managed to land a this:

There's an advert on the box at present promoting a drink that "aids digestive transition" I've got news for them - There's nothing like trying to deal with a bad tempered Conger on slippery rocks above a rough sea to speed up your digestive transition!

Tight lines all.
