Catching Mackeral

been a member for sometime but not sure how to post replies, questions etc. is this it? what are the best tides and conditions for mackeral off Chesil? Went to Seatown on a sunny day recently and caught nothing, nice time though. Thanks again for all the useful information and help, great reading but hard to remember it all

Re: Catching Mackeral

try over high or low

early morning or recently after most makkie bashers have left and you really think it is getting too dark

so a 9.30/45 pm high or low

Re: Catching Mackeral

I agree, the mackerel seem to have thinned out. I've been fishing on the flood tide up to high water and had limited success: averaging about two mackerel and hour! I have fished with feathers and one thing that I have done is let the feathers sink quite deep after the initial cast. If it's any help I count up to "eight elephants".

I'm not saying anymore as I realize I sound like a madman! Good hunting

Re: Catching Mackeral

Like Everhopeful said, try fishing different depths & also try different size weights & I believe this gives the feathers / lures different actions. I vary between 3 - 6oz. Another good tip if there are lots of Mackie bashers about (There usually are on Chesil) is to let them do all the work. Sit back & sunbathe or just fish a bottom bait. Then when you see someone else catching, have a few chucks yourself. Usually you can see the shoals moving along the beach by watching other people catching. If they ain't in front of you or within casting range, you won't catch em...
